A singular word is a word that names one person, place, thing, or idea. It's used when we talk about just one of something. Examples of singular words are car, cap, pencil, cloth, etc.
Plural words are words that name more than one person, place, thing, or idea. They are used when we talk about two or more of something. Examples of plural words are toys, pens, bottles, bags, etc.
There are many rules for changing singular words to plural. These are:
Rule 1: We can make a singular word plural by adding ‘-s’ to the end. For example, car-cars, pencil-pencils, toy-toys, etc.
Rule 2: When a singular word ends with -ch, -sh, -s, -ss, -o and -x, we add ‘-es’ to the end to make it a plural word. For example, box-boxes, glass-glasses, hero-heroes, etc.
Rule 3: We can make a singular word plural by changing -y into -ies if a singular word ends in a consonant before -y. For example, baby-babies, cherry-cherries, fairy-fairies, etc.
Rule 4: If a singular word has a vowel before -y, we add '-s' to make it plural. For example, key-keys, monkey-monkeys, donkey-donkeys, etc.
Rule 5: We can make a singular word plural by changing -f or -fe into '-ves'. For example, leaf-leaves, half-halves, wolf-wolves, etc.
