a. The Spelling Bee competition for class 5 accepts children from any board in India, such as CBSE, ICSE or a State Board, as well as children studying abroad.
b. CREST works with 6000+ schools across 60+ countries. If your child's school is not one of them this year, you can enter your child as an individual on the website.
c. The exam has one level. Ranks and awards for Class 5 come from that single Level 1 paper.
d. No adult should be seated with a Class 5 child during the exam. CREST monitors every paper by webcam, and unfair means can lead to disqualification without notice.
e. Exam hardware: a webcam plus a laptop, desktop or tablet larger than 11.5 inches on screen. Phones are excluded. Plan for a stable internet connection and the latest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work, but Safari does not); a Windows device needs Windows 8 or above, and a Mac or an iPad is also fine.
f. In India the fee is Rs. 275 per subject; abroad it is USD 15. Two optional practice tests come with it.
1. Spelling meets meaning. Class 5 adds Spell-probe (spellings based on meanings), Word Puzzle (matching words with meanings, antonyms and synonyms) and Word Twins (one word used in several sentences). Children start thinking about what a word means as well as how it is spelt.
2. A real step up in vocabulary. The Class 5 list grows to more than 550 words, with entries such as boycott, flammable, pamphlet and treasury.
3. A paper with a twist. One Class 5 review says CREST sets questions from the child's own class but twists them a bit, and another praises the good questions and nice time limit.
4. A Winter rank holder from Class 5. A Spell Bee (Winter) International Rank 1 in Class 5 (2020-21) is shown on this Hall of Fame profile.

Class 5 adds more new formats than any other CSBW class: Word Tally, Spell-probe, Word Twins and Word Puzzle, none of which appeared in any lower class. The paper rises from 50 to 65 questions, but the time stays at one hour. A few older formats get fewer questions (Spell Spies, Sound Check and Pictospell), while Spellacadabra and Word Fusion get more.
On the Spell Bee Winter syllabus for class 5, Section 1 is Spell Bee Words for Class 5, with more than 550 words; around 70%-80% of the questions come from it. Section 2 is Get, Set, Spell!, an audio section with a neutral accent, based on the same list. Hatred and pace are among the very few words repeated from Class 4. Some examples from Section 1: abdomen, boycott, coral, flammable, imaginary, orangutan, pamphlet, raven, treasury, vocalise.
Up to 20%-30% of questions may go beyond the list. Spellings are British (the list itself has vocalise with an s), and the Oxford Learner's Dictionary is the main reference; words it does not include are treated as non-existent.
All 65 questions carry one mark, for 65 marks, with no negative marking. The Class 5 format counts are:

With 65 questions in 60 minutes, speed is the new challenge in Class 5: that is about 55 seconds a question. Plan for eight weeks so there is time for both the bigger word list and timed practice.
Weeks one to five: cover the list in five parts. For every word, your child should know the spelling, the meaning and, where there is one, an opposite or similar word, since Word Puzzle asks for antonyms and synonyms. A notebook with three columns (word, meaning, opposite or synonym) keeps this tidy. The CREST word pages, such as armadillo and clarinet, give meanings and example sentences.
Two of the new formats suit quick daily drills. For Word Twins, take a list word such as resort or scent and use it in two different sentences. For Spell-probe, read out a meaning and ask your child for the spelling of the word it describes. Keep reading words aloud for Get, Set, Spell! as well.
Weeks six and seven: the class 5 Spell Bee sample papers, each one timed as a full hour. Note how long each format takes; if one is slow, practise it on its own the next day.
Week eight: revise the notebook and let your child try the free trial test on the exam device. Pick a slot at least 2 days in advance on the dashboard, and remind your child that every question is worth trying, as there is no negative marking.
