How to prepare for Class 8 Science Olympiad?

Class 8 has a long list, so plan about ten weeks and keep a tracker of which topics are done, revised and tested.

Divide it into three streams. Chemistry: Synthetic Fibres and Plastics, Metals and Non-metals, Coal and Petroleum, Combustion and Flame, and Chemical Effects of Electric Current. Physics: Force and Pressure, Friction, Sound, Some Natural Phenomena, Light, and Stars and the Solar System. Biology: Crop Production and Management, Microorganisms, Conservation of Plants and Animals, the cell, reproduction and endocrine system topic, and Pollution of Air and Water. Rotate the streams through the week so no subject goes cold.

An achiever who went on to take CSO International Rank 2 in Class 9 gave theory and problem-solving equal weight. He started from the basics, built up the theory and then solved past papers. His Hall of Fame page also describes a strict routine (up at 7 am, studying from 8:30 am, 15-minute breaks) that he kept for two years, so borrow the method more than the timetable.

Build the theory from CREST's workbook, which sits among the Science Olympiad books for Class 8. Olympiad Success, CREST's official preparation partner, also offers online Olympiad classes for Class 8.

For past-paper practice, use the Science Olympiad questions for Class 8 and the previous year paper in the table below. Give each attempt a clock: 72 seconds a question is the pace that 50 questions in an hour demands. Try the free trial early so the format holds no surprises.

In the last fortnight, switch from learning to testing: one timed paper every other day, with the days in between spent on whichever stream cost you the most marks.
