a. Every Class 4 child can apply for the English Olympiad for class 4, wherever they live and whichever board their school follows, be it CBSE, ICSE, IB or a State Board.
b. Parents can register a child directly online. Schools can also enrol a whole group; CREST has worked with 6000+ schools since it began in 2019.
c. On exam day your child works without help at a computer or tablet at home, with the webcam on and a screen of more than 11.5 inches. The CREST FAQ warns that using a phone or any other electronic device, or letting another person access the test, can lead to disqualification.
d. There are two levels, and Level 1 decides who moves on. Children in the top 55.56% of Class 4 Level 1 takers go through to Level 2, and a school that enters more than 25 Class 4 students also sends its top 3 school-registered students.
e. Before paying, you can try the free trial test, a replica of the main exam, to check the setup.
1. Sentences that hold together. Jumbled Words and Contractions are on the Class 4 list, along with conjunctions and punctuation. Questions like these train a child to put a sentence in the right order and finish it correctly.
2. Vocabulary that keeps growing. One Class 4 reviewer describes CREST as a platform where children can learn something new about words and improve their vocabulary.
3. Room to think. Another Class 4 testimonial says the Olympiad lets children practise and explore what they know, and helps develop creative thinking.
4. Recognition that lasts. Medals, merit certificates and international trophies are based on Level 2, and every participant gets a digital certificate for the year.

The Class 4 English Olympiad syllabus is where this list comes from; every Section 1 topic is shown in its official order:
After these twenty topics comes the Achievers Section, ten two-mark Higher Order Thinking Questions set on the list above.
What has changed since Class 3? The weight shifts back towards sentence building. Jumbled Words joins the list, Contractions returns after a year away (it was in Class 2 but not Class 3), and the list says Tenses instead of Simple Tenses. Homophones, Gender, Number, Proverbs and One Word are not in the Class 4 list, while Synonyms and Antonyms continue as two separate topics and Information Retrieval now covers both text and images.
The paper itself is unchanged from Class 3: 35 questions in 60 minutes for 45 marks, and Level 2 matches Level 1. Note how the marks are split. The Achievers Section is only 10 questions, yet at 2 marks each it carries 20 of the 45 marks. Wrong answers lose nothing.

Give Class 4 preparation about six to eight weeks, with 30-minute sessions on most days. At this age a child can do a set of questions independently and check the answers before you look.
Sentence work comes first. Cut sentences into word cards and rebuild them. Rewrite a paragraph using contractions (it is, we will, they are), then expand them again. Fill in conjunctions such as because, but and so. For tenses, take one verb and write it in the past, present and future. For reading, use real material: a class timetable, a picture story, a party invitation. Keep a synonyms-and-antonyms list going all term.
After the sentence work, your child can move to the class 4 English Olympiad sample papers. One CREST student who took International Rank 3 in the Class 4 English Olympiad liked to get ahead of school, learning each topic before it was taught in class and working through the books with confidence (see the Hall of Fame profile). Reading a chapter ahead in the school English book is an easy habit to borrow.
On pacing, a Class 4 child has roughly 1 minute 43 seconds for each question, since 35 questions share 60 minutes. The 10 Achievers questions carry 2 marks each, so do not rush them. Take the free trial test a week or two before the exam.
The CREST English workbook has chapter-wise explanations and questions for each topic. Olympiad Success, CREST's official preparation partner and an online Olympiad trainer, has more preparation material.

Level 1 is the qualifying round: clear its cut-off and your child sits Level 2, where the awards are decided.

International Ranks 1 to 3 get an Achiever's Trophy and a Merit Certificate.
