Competition of International Drawing Olympiad for Class 4

Class 4 brings back UN SDG 15 - Life on Land, the theme last set in Senior KG, but the subjects are much bigger now. The CREST International Drawing Olympiad (CIDO) list for Class 4 has the first scenery topic, Scenery - Graceful Deer Passing By The Woods, along with a Desert Oasis, a Jungle Scene and five posters, among them Flood Disaster and Erupting Volcano.

Scenes like these are a test of layout, and Neatness and Composition is worth 30 marks. A good habit is to draw the horizon line first, then the large shapes, then the small details, keeping the far trees smaller and lighter than the near ones. Posters such as Stop Pollution and Say No To Chemicals ask your child to take a stand and say it in a title of six words or fewer.

A full scenery takes longer to colour than a single object, so keep time for it within the 60 minutes. Level 1, on 21st and 25th July 2026, is the only round.

a. Is your child in Class 4? Then the Drawing Olympiad is open to them whatever the board (CBSE, ICSE, IB or a State Board), in India or anywhere else.

b. A school not yet registered with CREST can email info@crestolympiads.com for the prospectus. A child whose school is staying out can still draw in CIDO as an individual participant.

c. Your child draws alone on camera. Anyone sitting beside them, a face that slips out of view, or a phone or gadget picked up mid-drawing can get the attempt disqualified.

d. Home set-up: a webcam-fitted tablet, laptop or desktop whose display tops 11.5 inches; Macs and iPads are fine, and Windows devices need Windows 8 or later. Add stable internet and the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge and Firefox work too, but Safari does not). No phone may be used as the exam device.

e. There is no second level in the International Drawing Olympiad for class 4, so ranks and awards come from this one drawing.

1. A whole landscape to compose. Class 4 brings the first scenery topic in CIDO, Scenery - Graceful Deer Passing By The Woods, along with a Desert Oasis and a Jungle Scene. Children learn to place a foreground, middle and background on one sheet.

2. Posters with a cause. Five topics are posters, on pollution, chemicals, a flood, an erupting volcano and SDG 15 itself. Each one practises the Message Conveyed category, worth 10 marks.

1. International Drawing Olympiad Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a webcam and a good internet facility. Use a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches: a Windows computer or tablet running Windows 8 or above, a Mac, or an iPad. Phones cannot be used. Use the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work); the exam cannot be taken on the Safari browser. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Land and the living things on it are the focus of the International Drawing Olympiad syllabus for Class 4. The goal is UN SDG 15 - Life on Land, and its eight topics are listed below.

According to CREST, SDG 15 aims to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of land ecosystems, to manage forests sustainably, to fight desertification, to halt and reverse land degradation and to halt the loss of biodiversity. Several Class 4 topics map onto those aims directly: woods and a jungle for forests, an oasis for the desert, and posters against pollution and chemicals.

SDG 15 was last used in Senior KG, and it comes back in Class 4 with much bigger subjects. Scenery - Graceful Deer Passing By The Woods is the first scenery topic in any class, and Poster - SDG 15 Life On The Land is the first poster named after the goal itself. With five posters, Class 4 has more than Classes 2 and 3, which had four each.

The titles set real drawing problems. The deer are passing by, so they are moving, and graceful, so the lines should flow; the woods sit behind them. Desert Oasis is a contrast between dry sand and a patch of water and palms. Jungle Scene is crowded by nature, which makes balance harder. Poster - Flood Disaster and Poster - Erupting Volcano are dramatic events, while Stop Pollution and Say No To Chemicals ask your child to take a stand.

The International Drawing Olympiad for class 4 gives your child 60 minutes for one drawing, marked out of 100. Level 1 is the only round.

Marks are split across six categories: Neatness and Composition 30, Originality/Creativity 20, Theme Adherence 15, Quality of Scan 15, Title/Caption 10 and Message Conveyed 10. Layout and balance sit inside Neatness and Composition, with overall impact, line quality, colouring and shading, detailing and craftsmanship. A scenery topic tests balance and layout; a poster tests the message.

What to use: an HB pencil, eraser, sharpener and drawing board, and colours as the drawing needs (pencil colours, crayons, oil pastels, or pastel colours with a painting brush). Draw on a white A4 sheet measuring 210 mm by 297 mm.

How to set it up: leave a 1 cm border on every side and draw only within it. The name, CREST ID and class are written outside that border, in the left bottom corner.

What happens during the exam: your child draws on a clean, flat surface, keeping pencil lines crisp with no broken strokes or extra marks. Every 7-10 minutes the drawing must be shown to the camera so the committee can track its progress, and failing to do so may lead to disqualification.

How to send it: at the end, photograph the drawing on a plain background with as little background as possible, in high resolution, or scan it so there are no grey shades or scanner marks. Adobe Scan and Microsoft Office Scan are good choices. Upload it as .jpg, .jpeg or .png, up to 10 MB, within 5 minutes of submitting the exam; failing to do so may lead to disqualification.

A wide landscape with deer, trees and a stream takes longer to colour than a single object, so leave time for it within the hour.

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Give the International Drawing Olympiad for class 4 about five weeks of practice: two drawings a week, each followed by a short chat about what worked.

For each, your child writes a title of up to 6 words inside the border and draws one picture that tells the story without explanation, for example a river turning from grey to blue.

In the final week, set a timer for 60 minutes and complete a paper from the Class 4 International Drawing Olympiad sample papers. Show the sheet to the webcam every few minutes and finish with a clean photo or scan.

Class 4 results for the International Drawing Olympiad tend to arrive before a month has gone by since the last answer key date, and the login you registered with opens them on the dashboard, under performance.

In the results, ranking is by marks, with ties broken by less time taken and then by the younger date of birth. Ranks are normalised across sessions, and each zone (East, West, North, South, International) gets its own list.
