The CREST International Spell Bee (Winter) is India's first online spelling test conducted for class 7. Every year, the Spell Bee Winter competition is held to evaluate their spelling skills. Students learn the spellings of words as well as their forms, correct pronunciation, meanings, inflections & derivations, and word usage through the CREST International Spell Bee exam, which builds an understanding and knowledge of the words learned. CREST Olympiads holds only online Spell Bee International exams for students in class 7. Audio-based questions can be asked for the CREST Spell Bee class 7 exam. The student must hear the sentence and write the correct spelling.

a. Any Class 7 student can take the Spelling Bee competition for class 7, on any board and in any country. CBSE, ICSE and State Board students are all welcome.

b. Registering through your school is one route. The other is to register yourself on the CREST website if your school is not part of it.

c. Spell Bee Winter is a one-level exam for every class. In Class 7 that means one paper, and your rank and awards come from it.

d. You take the exam from home, alone, on a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches. The webcam stays on throughout, so your face must stay fully visible.

e. Phones cannot be used to take the test, and using a mobile or any electronic device during it can get you disqualified. Any Windows machine should run Windows 8 or above, and a Mac or an iPad is fine. Check beforehand that you have a stable internet connection and the latest version of Google Chrome; Edge or Firefox also work, but Safari does not.

f. For students in India the fee is Rs. 275 per subject. For students outside India it is USD 15. Both include two practice tests you can choose to take.

1. Getting to the root of words. Back to the Roots, where you work out the root word, joins the paper in Class 7 with three questions of its own.

2. Grown-up vocabulary. Candid, elucidate, hypocrisy and venerable are words you can put straight into an essay or a speech.

3. A smooth, professional exam. A Class 7 review, written when the child had so far taken only the Spell Bee, praises how professionally CREST conducts its exams and how user-friendly the website is.

1. Spelling Bee Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a computer or laptop with a webcam and a good internet facility. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Class 7 adds one format that no lower class has, Back to the Roots (know the root word), with 3 questions. Jumble Tumble goes from 5 to 6 questions and Word Puzzle from 4 to 5, so the paper grows from 65 to 70 questions in the same hour. The word list is new as well, apart from a few words such as deplete, discreet and intruder that were also on the Class 6 list.

What the Spell Bee Winter syllabus for class 7 covers:

• Section 1, Spell Bee Words for Class 7, holds more than 650 words in alphabetical order and sits behind roughly three in every four questions (CREST says 70%-80%). Examples: apprentice, candid, chrysanthemum, elucidate, hypocrisy, luminous, quench, scarcity, venerable, wield, atrocious, behest, destitute, futile, irksome, tawdry.
• Section 2: Get, Set, Spell! Listen, then write. The audio is in an Indian accent and the words are taken from Section 1.

The remaining 20%-30% of questions can reach beyond the list. Spelling follows British English. When in doubt, the Oxford Learner's Dictionary decides, for meanings as well as spellings, and a word it does not carry is not a word for this test.

Seventy questions at one mark each make 70 marks, and wrong answers cost nothing. In the order the marking scheme lists them, the thirteen formats carry: Word Champ 8, Spell Spies 6, Sound Check 3, Spellacadabra 8, Jumble Tumble 6, Pictospell 3, Word Tally 6, Spell-probe 4, Back to the Roots 3, Word Fusion 5, Word Twins 3, Word Puzzle 5 and finally Get, Set, Spell! with 10.

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Seventy questions in sixty minutes is roughly 51 seconds each, the tightest timing in CSBW so far. Your aim is to recognise most words instantly, so leave yourself eight to ten weeks.

Get through the list first. With more than 650 words, about 75 a week over nine weeks covers it. Say, write and check each word, and keep a notebook of meanings, opposites and similar words. The CREST word pages, for example aardvark and caveat, show meaning, usage and related words.

For Back to the Roots, pick list words and strip them back to their root, then find other words that share it. For Word Twins, write one word into two sentences with different senses.

From about week six, mix in the class 7 Spell Bee sample papers. Time every sample paper and record your score by format so you can see where the minutes go.

Use the Class 7 Spell Bee (Winter) workbook from the Olympiad books page for extra questions, and take the free trial test to check your device, camera and sound. Book your slot two or more days early. There is no negative marking, so answer everything.

In order for students to be aware of the minimal marking requirements, the CREST International Spell Bee cut-off and rankings are typically made accessible. These cut-off marks are offered so that students are aware of the minimal standard marks to qualify for the exam. After completing the Spell Bee Winter exam the cut-off will be revealed.

The CREST Olympiads will release the Spell Bee answer key within 1 week of the CREST International Spell Bee Winter exam. Students can find out their likely scores by checking answer keys. The Spell Bee answer key contains the correct answers to each question of the exam.

An Achiever's Trophy, with a Merit Certificate, is reserved for the students placed first, second and third worldwide in Class 7. Gold Medals go much wider: to everyone at or above the 96th percentile, to everyone ranked 10 or better in their zone, and to the top 3 school-registered students of a school with more than 25 in the class.

Percentiles from 93 to 96 bring silver, and 90 to 93 bronze. Each of these medals is paired with a Merit Certificate, which on its own also goes to the top quarter of the class.

Spell Bee Winter has no Level 2, so this is the final result. Class 8 keeps the same 70-question paper.
