a. The Mental Maths Olympiad for class 5 accepts Class 5 pupils of every board, in India and beyond, whether a school enters them or they register independently.

b. On exam day the student is alone at home, on camera. CREST counts a calculator, a phone or any other electronic device as grounds for disqualification, and the same goes for having someone sit alongside.

c. The hardware is a desktop, a laptop or a tablet larger than 11.5 inches (Windows 8 or above, a Mac or an iPad), plus a working webcam and steady, reliable internet in Google Chrome's latest version (Edge or Firefox are also accepted; Safari will not run it). A mobile phone will not do.

d. Level 2 is reached in one of two ways: a score among the top 55.56% of Class 5 entrants in Level 1, or a top-three place inside your own school's registered group when that group is larger than 25 in the class.

e. Reserve your slot no later than 2 days before the exam. Email and SMS reminders follow 2-3 days before it.

Class 5 starts afresh. Here are the eight topics on the Mental Maths Olympiad syllabus for class 5:

The paper jumps to 100 questions in an hour, worth 120 marks: 80 Basique questions at 1 mark and 20 Avance questions at 2 marks. From here the pattern holds steady all the way to Class 12. Level 2 mirrors Level 1, and an incorrect answer just earns nothing.

Class 5 changes two things at once: the topics and the pace (36 seconds a question now). Give it time and start early. Read through the Class 5 prep guide first and tick the sub-topics you have not met in school yet; those are where your first weeks should go.

Learn a few facts by heart, because they save seconds on every paper: squares of numbers up to 20, the tables up to 20, and the common fraction, decimal and percentage pairs such as 1/2, 1/4, 1/5 and 1/8.

Begin with the number tools you will use everywhere: BODMAS, divisibility rules, prime factors, and H.C.F. and L.C.M. Then give a week each to integers on the number line, fractions with decimals, and ratio and percentage.

The class 5 Mental Maths sample papers show the level. One asks which numbers in a list are divisible by 4, one gives a boys-to-girls ratio of 5 : 3 with 90 girls, and one wants the smallest number exactly divisible by 18, 24, 30 and 36. Each can be done in the head once the shortcut is known.

On the official website the class 5 CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO) answer key dates is made available. Answer key are typically released one week after the last exam date. Students who are taking the exam can only look at the answer key.
