You will sit the exam online from home by yourself with the webcam running, on a desktop, a laptop or a tablet larger than 11.5 inches (a Windows machine on Windows 8 or newer, a Mac or an iPad) but never on a phone. Use Google Chrome in its newest version, or Edge or Firefox, over a stable internet connection; Safari does not work.

d. No calculator. Using one during the exam is among the reasons for disqualification that CREST lists, together with phones and other electronic devices.

e. Level 2, the second of two levels, is for those whose Level 1 score puts them in the top 66.67% of the class and for each large school's top three school-registered scorers, where large means more than 25 students in your class.

1. Roots without a calculator. Squares, cubes and their roots stay on the Class 8 list, and this is the last year they are named there.

2. Thinking, not cramming. Questions that test concepts and make students apply them leave little room for rote learning, one Class 8 review observes.

Class 8 shares its list with Class 7. The Mental Maths Olympiad syllabus for class 8 covers Number System, Algebra, Square and Square Roots, Cube and Cube Roots, Comparing Quantities, Mensuration, Playing with Numbers, Data Handling and Symmetry, and Geometry.

It is also the last class whose list includes Square and Square Roots and Cube and Cube Roots, since neither appears from Class 9. That means squares, square roots and square roots of decimals, cube roots, exponents, H.C.F. and L.C.M., number patterns, bar and line graphs, symmetry, and lines and angles alongside the Comparing Quantities set.

Nothing changes in the paper either: one hour, 100 questions, 120 marks. Eighty Basique questions carry a mark each and twenty Avance questions two marks each in both levels, with no deduction ever made for a wrong answer.

Since the topics match Class 7, use the first weeks to find your weak spots. Do one timed set from each topic and rank the topics from slowest to fastest.

Then drill the slow ones. For percentages, learn fraction equivalents such as 1/8 = 12.5%. For speed questions, practise distance divided by speed until it is instant. For divisibility, learn the rules for 8 and 16.

The class 8 Mental Maths sample papers include a divisible-by-16 question, a box with 3 defective items out of 12, a bus covering 200 km at 80 km/h, and a table of marks to read. If a data table slows you down, leave it for the end.

On the official website, students of class 8 can view the CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO) answer key dates. Answer keys are made available on the answer key dates shown on the exam schedule. Only exam participants are allowed to review the answer keys.
