Eligibility Criteria for Class Senior KG International English Olympiad

a. Any child in Senior KG can take the English Olympiad for Senior KG, whatever the board (CBSE, ICSE, IB or another recognised board) and wherever they live. CREST Olympiads have drawn children from 6000+ schools and 60+ countries since 2019.

b. You can register in either of two ways: through the school, or individually online if the school has not signed up.

c. In Senior KG, a parent or teacher still helps. A grown-up can help your child understand each question, and your child then picks the answer.

d. No travel is involved. The exam is held online and proctored by webcam while your child sits at home. The exam does not run on mobiles, so what you need is a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen above 11.5 inches and a stable internet line. Windows 8 or above is required on Windows machines, and a Mac or an iPad is fine. Use the latest Google Chrome; Edge or Firefox are fine as well, but Safari is not.

e. The Senior KG English Olympiad runs in 2 levels. A Level 1 score of 60% or more earns your child a place in Level 2.

Benefits of English Olympiad for Class Senior KG

1. Early reading and writing skills. Rhyming words, words of up to four letters, and lines and curves are all on the Senior KG list, which keeps practice close to what many Senior KG classrooms already work on.

2. Words with meaning. Synonyms, antonyms, singular and plural, and people and their professions push a child past naming things towards thinking about how words relate.

3. First grammar, without the jargon. A and an, describing words, and little words like in, on and under are asked in simple, friendly questions, so grammar arrives as a game rather than a rule.

4. Something to aim for. The goal is 60% in Level 2: reach it, or go higher, and a Star Medal arrives with a Merit Certificate. There is no ranking, so the target is personal.

Class Senior KG English Olympiad Syllabus

Senior KG brings in early grammar and word meanings. Compared with Junior KG, Strokes (Lines and Curves), Rhyming Words, Basic Adjectives, Synonyms, Gender, People and their Professions and Singular-Plural appear for the first time, and Opposites now goes by the name Antonyms. Vowel Sounds, Sight Words, Action Words and the This and That, He and She pronouns are not in the Senior KG list.

The Senior KG English Olympiad syllabus sorts Section 1 into five headings:

In the Achievers Section, the five two-mark questions are Higher Order Thinking Questions built on those five headings.

Your child gets 45 minutes for 25 questions, marked out of 30, because 20 English Language questions carry 1 mark and the 5 Achievers questions carry 2. Level 2 is built on exactly this pattern, and a wrong answer never loses marks. One rule is special to English: CREST checks spellings and meanings against the Oxford Learner's Dictionary, and a word not found there is treated as not existing.

How to prepare for Class Senior KG English Olympiad?

For a five-year-old, aim for 15-minute sessions four or five days a week, starting about six weeks before the exam. Sit together, keep a sticker chart if your child likes one, and finish on an easy question.

Work through the list a piece at a time. Say the alphabet, then ask which letter comes before M or after R. Make up rhyming pairs at bedtime (cat, hat, mat). Build words of up to four letters with letter tiles. Practise standing lines, sleeping lines and curves on a slate. For grammar, play "a or an?" with objects around the house, describe toys with one adjective each, and hide things in, on or under a box. Talk about the people your child meets, such as the doctor, the postman and the teacher, and what each one does.

Next, use the Senior KG English Olympiad sample papers and the previous year paper in the table below. You read each question out; your child makes the choice. Look at mistakes together the next day, not straight away.

With 45 minutes for 25 questions, each one gets about 108 seconds, which leaves a five-year-old plenty of time to think. A week or two before the test, take the free trial together so the platform feels familiar. CREST's official preparation partner, Olympiad Success, also has preparation material on its website. The CREST English workbook for Senior KG is listed in the table.

Before results, the answer key is released and you can challenge any answer you disagree with on the answer key page. Each challenge costs Rs. 125; if the challenge is upheld, the money comes back and 50 reward points are added.
