a. Every Class 3 student can enter, whatever the board and wherever the family lives. Entries can arrive in bulk from a school, and CREST accepts individual entries as well.
b. At home, your child faces the paper without help. Keep calculators, phones and every other gadget switched off and away, and do not let anyone else touch the test.
c. A desktop, laptop or tablet is fine as long as the screen measures more than 11.5 inches and a webcam is fitted; a phone will not do. A Windows machine has to be on Windows 8 at least, and a Mac or an iPad is also accepted. Open the exam in a fully updated Google Chrome, with Edge or Firefox as fallbacks (Safari will not do), over a stable internet connection. The Rapid Fire section plays audio, so check that the sound works on that device.
d. In Class 3 the Spell Bee runs over two levels, with Level 2 taking the upper 66.67% of everyone in the class who sat Level 1. A school with more than 25 Class 3 entrants also sends its three highest-scoring school-registered students.
e. Once the fee is paid, choose your time in the dashboard's Book Slot/Take Exam area. On the day, the Click To Take Exam button appears ten minutes ahead of the slot; changing a booked slot costs Rs. 40.
f. There is also a free trial test that copies the format of the real paper.
1. How words are built. Prefix, Suffix and Compound Words arrive in Class 3, so children see that un plus happy, or cheer plus ful, makes a new word out of a familiar one.
2. Traps with names. Words with Silent Letters (knife, Wednesday) and the Evil Words, those likely to be spelt incorrectly (rhythm, straight), each get their own heading.
3. Ears as well as eyes. A Rapid Fire section starts in Class 3, where children hear a word and write its spelling quickly.
4. Flexible slots, and a Class 3 rank on record. The choice of slots, a Class 3 review notes, lets parents with jobs be present while their wards attempt the practice and main exams on the computer. Section 1: Spell Bee Competition Words for Class 3
Section 2
Rapid Fire, played as audio: each word is heard, then spelt in writing, using the word list above.
Words to expect this year include badminton (Sports), fortnight (Quantity), helicopter (Transport and Communication) and lion-lioness (Masculine and Feminine).
Plenty of everyday words sit in the longer headings too: earthquake, carefully, cucumber and the pair tiny-small.
The Class 1 and Class 2 word lists are also part of the Class 3 syllabus, though as much as 20% of the paper may use other words. Around 80% of Level 1 is drawn from this year's word list; Level 2 has no list.
Expect plenty of change this year. Headings that no earlier list had include Prefix, Suffix (age, ed, ied, ful, ly), Compound Words, Words with Silent Letters, Plurals, Masculine and Feminine, Sports, Quantity and Evil Words. Animals, Birds, Insects, Food Items, Clothing and the other Class 2 theme headings are not in this list.
Level 1 and Level 2 are set the same way: 60 questions, 60 minutes, 60 marks at 1 mark each, and a mistaken answer simply earns zero. Rapid Fire alone has 20 questions; Word Connection has 12, Word Makeup 9, Word Cookie 7, Spell-o-Spell 6, and Mingle-Mangle and PictureSpeak 3 each. Word Chain, part of the Class 1 and 2 papers, is not in the Class 3 paper. The class 3 Spell Bee marking scheme has the details.

Spend the first fortnight on the building-block headings. Make word towers: write kind and add -ly, or take honest and put dis- in front. For Plurals, sort words by their rule, as in box-boxes, city-cities, loaf-loaves and goose-geese.
Silent letters reward slow reading aloud. Say knife, knock and hour, then ask your child which letter stayed silent.
Rapid Fire is 20 of the 60 questions, so make dictation a habit. Call out ten words, one after another with no pause, as your child writes; then mark them side by side. Words from the Evil Words heading, such as shepherd, triumph and treasure, are good choices; CREST's page for each word gives its meaning and usage.
Keep the Class 1 and 2 lists in rotation, since they are part of this year's syllabus too. Masculine and Feminine pairs such as peacock-peahen and lion-lioness make a quick quiz at dinner.
Keep the final three weeks for timed runs of the class 3 Spell Bee sample papers. Sixty questions in 60 minutes means one minute a question, and your child manages that time alone. Fit in the free trial as well. On the Olympiad books page there is also a Class 3 Spell Bee (Summer) workbook from CREST, packed with further practice.
