Benefits of Class 4 Spell Bee Competition

1. Words for school and science. Education and Science and Technology add words such as academic, curriculum, ecosystem, gravity and satellite, so the list reaches well beyond everyday home words.

2. Sea creatures by name. Aquatic Life brings dugong, haddock and puffin, names a child may know from pictures but may never have written. Clothing comes back with blanket, slacks and sweatshirt.

3. More words, better vocabulary. One Class 4 review values CREST as a place where the young generation picks up new words and builds vocabulary; a further Class 4 review sees it as somewhere kids learn, practise and dig into what they already know. More reviews are on the testimonials page.

4. A Class 4 milestone on record. Top spot internationally in the Class 4 Spell Bee (Summer) of 2023-24, then again in Class 5 in 2024-25: that double is recorded on one Hall of Fame profile.

Look out too for nephew-niece, wheelchair, syllabus and rapidly, each tucked under a longer heading. Science and Technology alone runs from eclipse and equator to malware and router, mixing nature with computing.

The Class 1-3 word lists are included in the Class 4 syllabus as well. About 80% of Level 1 comes from the word list, up to 20% of questions may use other words, and Level 2 has no list.

Against Class 3, Class 4 introduces Education, Science and Technology, Aquatic Life and a longer Suffix heading (able, al, ance, ant, ence, est, ful, ial, ion, ish, ize, less, ly, st). Clothing (last listed in Class 2) and Occupation (last listed in Class 1) come back. Dropped since Class 3: Environment, Body, Emotions/Requests/Apology/Greetings, Quantity, Plurals and the shorter Suffix heading.

Both levels use the Class 3 pattern of 60 one-mark questions in an hour, 60 marks in total and no penalty for errors. Listening carries the most weight, with 20 Rapid Fire questions. Word relationships (Word Connection) take 12 and word building (Word Makeup) 9, while catching single-letter errors (Word Cookie) takes 7 and Spell-o-Spell 6; jumbled letters (Mingle-Mangle) and picture questions (PictureSpeak) have 3 each. How to prepare for Class 4 Spell Bee Competition?

A six-week plan works well in Class 4, with your child doing most of it and you checking spellings at the end of each session.

Fortnight one: the new and returning themes. Pick five words a day from Science and Technology, Education, Aquatic Life and Occupation (plumber, with its silent b, is a good test).

Week 3: word building. Word Makeup has 9 questions on suffixes, prefixes and compound words, so practise adding mis- to behave, semi- to circle, -able to comfort and -less to rest.

Week 4: the tricky headings. Read the silent-letter words aloud (island, often, receipt) and test the Evil Words, such as necessary, committee and beginning, until they come out right every time. Quiz Masculine and Feminine pairs like duke-duchess, emperor-empress and hero-heroine.

Week 5: Rapid Fire and older lists. Dictate words from the Class 1-3 lists at a brisk pace, since Rapid Fire is a third of the paper.

Week 6: full class 4 Spell Bee sample papers at one minute per question, then the free trial. Want something on paper as well? CREST sells a Class 4 Spell Bee (Summer) workbook through its Olympiad books page.
