Eligibility Criteria for Class Nursery International Science Olympiad

a. If your child is 3 to 4 and in Nursery, the Science (EVS) Olympiad for Nursery is open to them. Any school board is fine, whether CBSE, ICSE, IB, a State Board or another one, and families can apply from any country.

b. Either use the registration page yourself or let the school enter its Nursery class as a group.

c. A parent or teacher assists throughout. A grown-up sits beside the child, helps them understand each picture question, and then the child picks the answer.

d. It is taken at home, online. Keep a computer or tablet ready, with a screen bigger than 11.5 inches and a webcam that works, because the exam is webcam monitored. A Windows computer needs Windows 8 or newer, and a Mac or an iPad is fine. Add a stable internet connection and the latest Google Chrome, or Edge or Firefox; Safari will not work. A mobile phone will not do for this exam.

e. The Nursery exam has a Level 1 and a Level 2, and children who score 60% or more in Level 1 move up to Level 2.

f. The free trial test copies the main exam and is free, so try it first and decide afterwards.

Benefits of Science Olympiad for Class Nursery

1. Little ones learn to notice. The Nursery paper asks about things a three-year-old already meets: a cat, a bus, a mango, a raincoat. Naming and sorting them in a quiz turns everyday looking into real observation.

2. Good habits, said out loud. Cleanliness, good manners, healthy food, daily routine and safety habits are all on the Nursery list. Talking through these questions with you helps a child explain why hands are washed before meals, or why everyone waits at the kerb.

3. Words for feelings and for the body. The units on My Feelings and My Amazing Body give children simple words for how they feel and for what their eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin do.

4. A gentle first exam. CREST gives no ranks before Class 2, and every child receives a Digital Participation Certificate. A score of 60% or more in Level 2 brings a Star Medal and a Merit Certificate. A published Senior KG testimonial thanks CREST for giving the youngest classes a chance to take part.

Class Nursery Science (Environmental Science) Olympiad Syllabus

The Science (EVS) Olympiad syllabus for Nursery is where CREST Science begins, so there is no lower class to compare it with. Everything sits in Section 1, grouped into nine small themes:

Higher Order Thinking Questions fill the Achievers Section, and they stick to these Section 1 themes. There is nothing extra to learn; these questions simply ask a child to look twice.

Expect 25 questions in a 45-minute paper worth 30 marks. As per the marking scheme, 20 one-mark questions come from Section 1 and 5 two-mark questions from the Achievers Section. Level 2 is set the same way, and no mark is ever taken away for a wrong answer.

How to prepare for Class Nursery Science (Environmental Science) Olympiad?

Think of Nursery preparation as play time with a purpose. Ten minutes a day, with you sitting close, is plenty, and it is fine to stop the moment your child loses interest.

Most of the syllabus is already in your house. Play "touch your nose, now your ears" for My Amazing Body. Sort fruits and vegetables after a trip to the market. Make an animal sound and ask which animal it was, then match baby animals to their mothers in a picture book. At the window, spot vehicles and decide which are slow and which are fast. On a rainy day, talk about the season and what to wear for it.

When the themes feel familiar, sit together with the Nursery Science Olympiad sample papers. Read each question aloud, give your child time to point at a picture, and praise the thinking as much as the answer.

On exam day there are 25 questions and 45 minutes, about 108 seconds a question, which is a relaxed pace. A child who has never used a computer may still find the screen new, so once you have tried a couple of sample papers, do the free trial together with the webcam on. Practice books for this level are listed on the Olympiad books page.
