The CREST International Spell Bee (Winter) is India's first online spelling test conducted for class 4. The Spell Bee competition for class 4 students is held to evaluate their spelling skills. Students learn the spellings of words as well as their forms, correct pronunciation, meanings, inflections & derivations, and word usage through the CREST International Spell Bee exam, which builds an understanding and knowledge of the words learned. CREST Olympiads holds only online Spell Bee International exams for students in class 4. Audio-based questions can be asked for the CREST Spell Bee class 4 exam. The student must hear the sentence and write the correct spelling.

a. A school can enter your child, or you can register from home. Families whose school is not taking part can sign up directly.

b. Class 4 students of CBSE, ICSE, State Boards and all other boards are eligible for the Spelling Bee competition for class 4, and so are students who live and study outside India.

c. There is just one round. The CSBW Level 1 exam is the only paper, and the awards are based on it.

d. Children in Class 4 take the paper without help. CREST can disqualify a Class 4 paper if an adult sits alongside, if someone else accesses the test, or if a calculator or any electronic device comes out.

e. The exam happens at home, watched through the webcam. A laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen above 11.5 inches is required, mobiles are not allowed, and CREST recommends a stable internet connection with the latest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work; the exam cannot be taken on Safari).

f. Fees: Rs. 275 per subject in India, USD 15 elsewhere, covering two online practice tests that are optional.

1. Spelling by ear. Get, Set, Spell! has its own Section 2 on the Class 4 syllabus, and ten questions ask children to listen to a word and write it correctly.

2. Fun, unusual words. Tambourine, trampoline, orchid and fungus sit alongside everyday words like attic and whisk, so there is always something new to look up.

Students who register separately from school & want to appear for the online Spelling Bee exam for class 4 can follow these simple steps:

1. Spelling Bee Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a computer or laptop with a webcam and a good internet facility. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

The Class 4 paper is set out exactly like Class 3: 50 questions in an hour, the same eight formats and the same counts. On the syllabus page, the listening part now appears under its own heading, Section 2. The words, though, are nearly all new; berth is one of very few that also appeared in Class 3.

The Spell Bee Winter syllabus for class 4, part by part:

• Section 1, Spell Bee Words for Class 4, has over 400 words from A to Z and is the source of most of the paper (about 70%-80% of questions). A handful to start with: accident, attic, celebration, elevator, fungus, orchid, predict, tambourine, trampoline, whisk, decade, expand, league, maiden, purchase, security.
• Section 2: Get, Set, Spell! Your child hears an audio clip, read in an Indian accent, and writes the word asked. Every word comes from Section 1.

A further 20%-30% of questions may bring in words that are not listed. Which spelling counts? The British one, as given in the Oxford Learner's Dictionary, which CREST also uses for meanings. If that dictionary has no entry for a word, the test treats the word as if it does not exist.

One mark per question gives a total of 50, and wrong answers lose nothing. By format: Get, Set, Spell! 10, Word Champ 8, Spell Spies 8, Spellacadabra 6, Jumble Tumble 5, Pictospell 5, Sound Check 4, Word Fusion 4.

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Try a seven-week plan for Class 4: four weeks on the word list, two on sample papers and a last week of revision. Twenty to thirty minutes a day is enough.

Weeks one to four: take roughly a quarter of the list each week, A to E, F to L, M to R and S to Z. Your child reads the words, writes them from dictation, and notes the meaning of any unfamiliar one in a word notebook. Animal and food words make good starting points; antelope and barbecue both have CREST word pages with meanings and usage.

Section 2 is all about listening, so practise it by ear from week one. Read ten list words aloud, one at a time, without showing them, and have your child write each one. Mark them together and keep a running list of misses to repeat on Fridays.

Weeks five and six belong to the class 4 Spell Bee sample papers. With 50 questions in 60 minutes, your child has 72 seconds a question. After every sample paper, look at which formats lost marks, for example Word Fusion or Jumble Tumble, and give those a few extra minutes.

CREST Olympiads will publish the CREST Spell Bee Winter cut-off marks for the class 4 students. The CREST International Spell Bee cut-off and rankings will be available online at the CREST Olympiads website. There will be a separate Spell Bee cut-off for each class.

The Spell Bee answer key contains correct answers to all of the exam questions. Students can estimate their scores in the CREST International Spell Bee Winter (CSBW) Olympiad exam. Students can access the CREST Spell Bee answer keys by logging in with the credentials & going to the dashboard section.

Class 4 Spell Bee results usually arrive about a month after the last day on which answer keys are shown. Sign in with your registered login; the result is in the Performance section of the dashboard.

Zonal ranks matter for awards, so it helps to know your zone. All states and union territories of India fall into North, South, East or West, and every other country makes up the International zone. A zonal rank of 10 or less is one route to a Gold Medal. The others are the 96th percentile and above and, for children entered by a school with more than 25 in the class, a school rank in the top 3.

Silver and bronze go by percentile (93 to 96, and 90 to 93). Qualifying on two or more counts moves a child up to the higher award. Anything physical, such as a medal, is delivered to whichever school or home address was entered at registration.

Looking ahead, Class 5 brings four new formats and 65 questions, so the step up next year is a big one.

There is no ideal age for your child to begin Spell Bee preparation. However, if your child is interested, they can begin preparation irrespective of age.
