Spell Bee Competition (Summer) for Class 6

Spell Bee competition for class 6 is conducted each year for students to test their vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation in English. Spell Bee competition is a unique way to familiarize students with new words and vocabulary as they get exposed to root words. CREST Olympiads organizes the International Spell Bee Summer competition for class 6 students. The best part of the exam is that it consists of an audio round where candidates attempt to listen and write down the spelling correctly assigned to them. CREST Olympiads conducts only online Spell Bee exams for class 6. It is one of the best ways to teach the English language to kids.

a. Who can enter? Every Class 6 student, whatever the board or country, either via a school that has registered or on their own through the CREST website.

b. How many levels? Two. Level 2 seats go to the upper 55.56% of Class 6 Level 1 scorers, with places also for the top three school-registered students of any school entering over 25 from your class.

c. Who sits with you? Nobody. You work alone at home, and the webcam must show your whole face throughout.

d. What equipment? A laptop, desktop or tablet whose display tops 11.5 inches and carries a webcam, a stable internet line, and the latest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work; Safari is not supported). Windows needs to be version 8 or above, and mobiles are not an accepted device.

e. What does it cost? Rs. 275 in India or USD 15 abroad, and that buys two practice tests you can take or skip.

f. How do you start? Log in, open Book Slot/Take Exam and press Click To Take Exam, which goes live 10 minutes before your slot. Start with the free trial if you are new.

1. Real-world vocabulary. Professionals/Doctors, a heading no earlier class had, brings long job titles such as cardiologist, ophthalmologist and paediatrician, and STEM Words adds body and farming words like femur, ligament and irrigation.

2. Spelling the British way. Words such as paediatrician, anaesthesiologist and neighbourhood follow British English, the convention CREST applies to every spelling in the test, checked against the Oxford Learner's Dictionary.

3. Sharper reading. Silent letters (colonel, diaphragm, yolk, hymn) and homophones such as principle-principal and compliment-complement train you to look closely at every letter before you answer.

4. Systematic and well planned. Students who register separately from school & want to appear for the online Spelling Bee exam for class 6 can follow these simple steps:

1. Spelling Bee Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a computer or laptop with a webcam and a good internet facility. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Section 2

Rapid Fire: an audio section in which you hear each word and write how it is spelt, drawing on the Section 1 list.

Some of the harder entries: citizenship (Government and Economy), pretzel (from the Wimpy Kid heading), unforgettable (Double Letter Words), obstacle (Evil Words) and the idiom 'hold your horses'.

Further down the page sit veterinarian, meddle-medal, widespread and scarcely.

The syllabus also includes the Class 1-5 word lists, and at most 20 in every 100 questions can draw on other vocabulary. Roughly four in five Level 1 questions are based on the word list; Level 2 gives no list at all.

Against the Class 5 list, Class 6 adds Professionals/Doctors, Government and Economy and a Suffix heading for acy, al, ary, gamy, hood, ial, ist, ment and ship, while Education returns from Class 4. Gone from the Class 6 list are Household Items, Agriculture, Government Affairs, Occupation, Miscellaneous and the Suffix heading used in Class 5.

Both papers share one format, unchanged from Class 5: 80 marks from 80 questions in 60 minutes, with no marks lost for errors. A quarter of the paper is Rapid Fire. Word Makeup and Word Cookie take 10 questions each; Word Connection, Word Ensemble and Mathlish 8 each; Spell-o-Spell 6; Word Melody 4; while Mingle-Mangle and PictureSpeak get 3 apiece. The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

You have 45 seconds a question in Class 6, so build both accuracy and pace. Give yourself six weeks, four sessions a week.

Weeks one and two: the long themed headings. Work through Professionals/Doctors, STEM Words, Government and Economy (amendment, electorate) and Education (pedagogy, literacy). Write each word three times and use it once in a sentence.

Week 3: silent letters and Evil Words. Words like hymn, diaphragm, renaissance and precipitation need extra rounds. Look a few up on CREST's word pages; the page for colonel explains its meaning and where the word comes from.

Week 4: Word Ensemble and homophones. Learn proverbs such as 'A rolling stone gathers no moss' and idioms such as 'a blessing in disguise', and test yourself on pairs like principle-principal.

Week 5: Rapid Fire. Ask someone to read twenty words at a steady pace while you write, mixing this year's list with the Class 1-5 lists, which are part of your syllabus.

The class 6 Spell Bee cut-off & rankings are generally released for students to understand the minimum marking criteria. This lets students know the minimum marks required to pass the examination. The cut-offs are out after the actual examination is conducted. Participants can take a look at the cutoff on the CREST Olympiads website.

The Spell Bee competition answer key for class 6 is released within one week after the examination is held. This way of offering students with the answer key enables them to understand their mistakes and rectify them in the coming exams. It also allows them to predict their scores before the actual declaration of the results. These answer keys can be checked on the dashboard of the website.

Look at the answer keys on their fixed dates, because once those pass the keys cannot be opened. Sure an answer is wrong? Challenge it from the answer key page with a short explanation. You pay Rs. 125 per challenge; if the Academic Council rules for you, you are refunded and credited 50 reward points.

Level 1 marks are out a month or so after the Level 1 answer keys end, and Level 2 marks follow inside a month of the Level 2 keys. Log in with the details you registered with to see your class 6 Spell Bee results.

Level 1 settles whether you get into Level 2; your rank and any award then come from the Level 2 paper.

The awards, top down: an Achiever's Trophy for the first three international places; gold at the 96th percentile or above, for any zonal rank from 1 to 10, or for a top-three result among students your school registered (where more than 25 in the class sit the exam); silver across the 93-96 band; bronze across 90-93; and a Merit Certificate with every medal. After this year, the Spell Bee moves from word lists to a single book, Wren and Martin's High School English Grammar and Composition.
