Science Olympiad for Class 1

CREST Olympiads conducts an international Science Olympiad for class 1 students. It is one of the most competitive internationally conducted Science Olympiad exams. The talents from across the globe compete by participating in the exam to secure a rank. a. Whatever board the school follows, CBSE, ICSE, IB, a State Board or another, a Class 1 child can enter the Science Olympiad for Class 1.

b. CREST Olympiads reach 6000+ schools in 60+ countries. If your child's school is one of them, register through it; if not, register individually.

c. Class 1 is the last assisted class. A parent or teacher can sit with the child and help them follow each question. From Class 2 the child must sit alone, or the attempt can be disqualified.

d. The exam is online, from home, with the webcam on all the way through. The screen must measure more than 11.5 inches, on a laptop, desktop or tablet. Computers need Windows 8 or later, and mobiles are not allowed.

e. The exam runs in two levels, and a Level 1 score of 60% or more earns a Class 1 child a place in Level 2.

1. Living or non-living? Class 1 opens with this question, and it is a big one for a six-year-old. Deciding whether a seed, a cloud or a toy car is alive teaches children to look for clues instead of guessing.

2. Looking up. Weather and the Sky asks children to notice what is happening overhead, which turns the walk home from school into a small science lesson.

3. Needs and habits make sense. Human Beings and Their Needs, and Good Habits and Safety Rules, link Science to daily life: why people need food, water and a home, and why hands are washed before eating.

4. Confidence on the computer. A published Class 1 testimonial says CREST built up a young girl's confidence along with her computer skills. Each participant in the Science Olympiad for Class 1 also receives a Digital Participation Certificate, so the effort is recognised.

1. Science Olympiad Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a computer or laptop with a webcam and a good internet facility. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Class 1 is where the CREST Science paper changes shape. The themed units of Senior KG give way to a list of single topics. Living and Non-living Things is new, and so are Human Beings and Their Needs and Weather and the Sky. Plants and Animals continue, habits and safety carry on as Good Habits and Safety Rules, and Music and Games and Transport are no longer listed.

The Science Olympiad syllabus for Class 1 has just seven topics:

For the Achievers Section, expect Higher Order Thinking Questions; its syllabus is Section 1 again.

The paper also gets longer this year, with 35 questions over an hour, worth 45 marks in all. That is 25 one-mark questions from Section 1 and 10 Achievers questions worth 2 marks each. The Level 2 paper is built the same way, with nothing deducted for wrong answers. The Class 1 Science Olympiad marking scheme shows the section-wise split.

CREST describes its syllabus as an outline. A few questions may check a slightly deeper understanding of these topics, so an everyday example often helps more than a memorised line.

The exam dates for CREST Science Olympiad (CSO) for Class 1 for the Academic year 2026-27 are as given below:

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

A Class 1 child can concentrate for longer than a KG child, but still needs you close by. Twenty minutes at a time, three or four days a week, across the last month before the exam, is about right.

Focus on a single topic each time. Walk around the house and sort things into living and non-living, then ask your child to explain one choice. Grow a bean seed on wet cotton and watch it for a week. Talk about what people need to live: food, water, clothes and a home. Practise safety rules at the road and in the kitchen. Look at the sky in the morning and in the evening, and keep a small weather diary. Ask why air cannot be seen but can be felt on a windy day.

You will find CREST's own workbook for Class 1 in the table at the end of this section. For extra tests, Olympiad Success, the official preparation partner of CREST Olympiads, sells a Science Olympiad mock test series for Class 1, and its website has more preparation material.

After a week or two of that, bring out the class 1 Science Olympiad sample papers. Read the longer questions slowly with your child. Some questions run long (one Class 1 review found certain word problems lengthy), so show your child how to split them up: first look at the picture, then find the actual question.

Time it once your child is settled. An hour shared by 35 questions leaves about 1 minute 43 seconds for each. Once a full sample paper goes smoothly in one sitting, move on to the free practice test, so that working on the computer with the webcam on feels routine by exam day.

In the last few days, stop adding new material. Go back over the sample papers and the topics your child enjoyed most, and let them teach you one thing about plants or animals. A child who can explain an idea usually remembers it on exam day.

Science Olympiad cutoff for class 1 will be released through online mode. The class 1 Science Olympiad cut-off & rankings can be viewed by any participants on the official website. This cut-off is the minimum marks that students should attain in the CREST Science Olympiad to pass the examinations.

Some exceptional platforms like CREST Olympiads release the Science Olympiad class 1 answer Key within a week after the examination is held. The answer key will contain answers to questions asked in the Olympiad of Science. Students will be able to calculate their probable scores with the answer keys. Answer keys can be easily seen by participants on the dashboard. 

Class 1 Science Olympiad results arrive in two steps: Level 1 about a month after the answer key dates end, and Level 2 within about a month of that level's final answer key. Sign in to the CREST Olympiads website with the login you registered to see the results.

No rank is given in Class 1, as a grown-up assists, just as in KG. What the Level 1 results decide is Level 2: your child needs 60% or more to go through. In Level 2, reaching 60% or more earns the Star Medal with a Merit Certificate, and everyone who takes part receives a digital participation certificate.

Ranks start next year: from Class 2, the results add percentiles, zone ranks and medals. Treat this year as a low-pressure check on how your child is doing.
