Benefits of Maths Olympiad for Class 9

1. Board-exam groundwork. Polynomials, coordinate geometry, statistics and probability carry straight into Class 10 and the board exam. Solving harder Olympiad versions now can make the board paper feel lighter.

2. Practice for future competitive exams. CREST describes its Olympiads as stepping stones to larger and more competitive exams later in life, and Class 9 is a good time to start treating them that way.

3. Logical and critical thinking. A Class 9 reviewer told CREST they will always take this Olympiad because it improved their logical and critical thinking.

4. A fair, clear measure. Results come with zonal and international rankings, so you can see how you compare with Class 9 students far beyond your own school. That is a useful reality check a year before the Class 10 board exam.

How to prepare for Class 9 Maths Olympiad?

Class 9 Maths is heavier than anything before it, so plan for about two months alongside school. Note which chapters school will finish before the exam and fit the rest in around them.

Some chapters reward daily practice. Do a few Polynomials problems every day. Plot points for Coordinate Geometry and Linear Equations in Two Variables on graph paper until it is routine. Keep a formula sheet for Heron's Formula and Surface Areas and Volumes, and revise it each week. Statistics and Probability are scoring if you read the question carefully.

Use the Maths Olympiad questions for class 9 (the class 9 sample papers) and the previous year paper below to judge your level, and check the marks distribution before deciding where to spend time.

50 questions in 60 minutes means about 72 seconds per question. The paper is multiple choice, so you won't write out geometry proofs; practise spotting the right property quickly instead. Take the free practice test to settle the webcam and browser setup.

An achiever who took CMO International Rank 1 in Class 9 studied 10 hours a day and limited his screen time to 30 minutes a day (see his Class 9 Hall of Fame profile). Few students need hours like that, but cutting screen time in the weeks before the exam is a habit anyone can copy.
