The CREST International Spell Bee (Winter) is India's first online spelling assessment for class 6, assessing students on the meaning, spelling, and vocabulary of English words. As a consequence, it will assist students in fostering their grammar development, which is the fundamental basis of the English language.

a. If you are in Class 6, you can enter the Spelling Bee competition for class 6 whatever your board (CBSE, ICSE, a State Board or any other) and wherever you study, in India or abroad.

b. Your school may register you along with your classmates. If it is not taking part, you or your parents can register you directly with CREST.

c. On exam day it is just you, at home, with the webcam on. Keep your face fully in view, make sure nobody else accesses the test, and keep phones, calculators and other electronic devices out of use, or you risk disqualification.

d. Your device should be a laptop, desktop or tablet, and its screen must measure over 11.5 inches. Windows 8 or a later version is required on a Windows device; a Mac or an iPad works as well. Phones are ruled out as exam devices. A stable internet connection and the latest Google Chrome (or Edge or Firefox) are recommended; Safari is not supported.

e. Spell Bee Winter has one level, so the Level 1 paper is your only paper and decides your result.

f. The fee is Rs. 275 (India) or USD 15 (outside India) per subject, with two optional practice tests included.

1. Words from your other subjects. The Class 6 list includes algebra, biodiversity, chronological and papyrus, so spelling practice links up with what you study in class.

2. Twelve kinds of question. The paper mixes listening, spelling, meanings, word building and sentence use, which keeps an hour of spelling varied.

3. A first online olympiad. One Class 6 testimonial, written after a first online olympiad, says it built problem-solving and analytical thinking and left the writer motivated to aim for better scores.

4. Rankings to aim for. A published Class 6 review mentions a child who took CREST Olympiads year after year and won International Ranks in English and Spell Bee. The Hall of Fame shows a CSBW International Rank 1 in Class 6 (2021-22) on one profile.

1. Spelling Bee Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a webcam and a good internet facility. Use a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches: a Windows computer or tablet running Windows 8 or above, a Mac, or an iPad. Phones cannot be used. Use the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work); the exam cannot be taken on the Safari browser. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Class 6 uses the same paper pattern as Class 5: 65 one-mark questions in 60 minutes across twelve formats, with the same number of questions in each. Only the words are different. Banquet, brainstorm and inertia are among the handful that also appear on the Class 5 list; the rest are new.

Two sections make up the Spell Bee Winter syllabus for class 6. The first, Spell Bee Words for Class 6, is a list of over 550 words set out alphabetically, and roughly 70% to 80% of the questions come from it. A few of them: algebra, biodiversity, chronological, contagious, decipher, fenugreek, iceberg, nomadic, papyrus, transient, carnivore, gracious, herbivore, mentor, opponent, vulnerable. The second is Get, Set, Spell!: you hear a word from that list spoken in a neutral accent and write down how it is spelt.

Not everything is on the list, though. Expect up to 20% to 30% of the questions to use other words. One dictionary settles every doubt: CREST takes spellings and meanings from the Oxford Learner's Dictionary, follows British English, and does not accept as a word anything that dictionary leaves out.

The paper is marked out of 65 with no negative marking. Here are the twelve formats in alphabetical order, with what each asks and how many questions it has:

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

You have about 55 seconds per question, so aim to know most list words well enough to answer without hesitating. Start around two months before your slot.

Split the list across six weeks. Each day, read your share aloud, cover it, write it, and check. For any word you do not know, write the meaning and a sentence in your word notebook. Look up words on the CREST word pages as you go; amulet and bellicose are both on the Class 6 list.

Group words by family: words ending in -ous such as contagious, Science words such as biodiversity and iceberg, and words you keep getting wrong. Sorting words like this is also good practice for Word Fusion and Spell-probe.

In the final fortnight, sit the class 6 Spell Bee sample papers with a 60-minute timer running. Use each sample paper to find your slowest formats, then drill those.

Practise listening too: ask someone at home to read ten words aloud while you write them, then swap roles so you hear how each word sounds. Before exam week, take the free trial test to see the real screen, and book your slot at least two days ahead. On the day, leave no question unanswered.

In order for students to be aware of the minimal marking requirements, the CREST International Spell Bee cut-off and rankings are typically made accessible. These cut-off marks are offered so that students are aware of the minimal standard marks to qualify for the exam. After completing the Spell Bee Winter exam the cut-off will be revealed.

The CREST Olympiads will release the Spell Bee answer key for the CREST International Spell Bee Winter exam on the answer key dates shown on the exam schedule. Students can find out their likely scores by checking answer keys. The Spell Bee answer key contains the correct answers to each question of the exam.

Give it up to a month from the last answer key date, and your class 6 Spell Bee result will be up. Sign in with the account you registered and select Performance.

If you are wondering how two students with the same marks are separated: the one who finished faster goes higher, and if that is also equal, the younger one by date of birth. After that the rank is shared. CREST also normalises ranks, as the exam runs over several days and sessions with different papers.

A Gold Medal comes from the 96th percentile and above, a zonal rank of 10 or less, or a school rank of 1 to 3 (if you entered through a school with more than 25 in your class). Silver and bronze cover the next two percentile bands, 93-96 and 90-93.

The students are recognized for their performance and it’s one of the great ways to encourage them to do such great things again and again. CREST Olympiads awards top performers of Classes 2 to 8 with trophies, medals and certificates based on their international, school and percentile ranks in the CREST Spelling Bee (Winter) competition exam. Senior KG and Class 1 students are not ranked; those scoring 60% or more receive a Star Medal and Merit Certificate, and every participant receives a digital participation certificate.
