Exam Highlights for Class 3 CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO)

a. Any board, any country: the Mental Maths Olympiad for class 3 takes them all. A school can enter its pupils, or a parent can do the registration directly.

b. Since children answer by themselves from Class 2 onwards, nobody sits beside a Class 3 child during the paper, and the webcam has to see the whole face from the first question to the last.

c. Kit list: a desktop, a laptop or a tablet larger than 11.5 inches (a Windows 8 or later device, a Mac or an iPad), a webcam that works and a dependable home connection. CREST recommends the latest Google Chrome as the browser; Edge or Firefox can be used instead, but never Safari. A phone cannot stand in for any of these.

d. Of all Class 3 candidates in Level 1 the top 66.67% move up to Level 2. A school registering more than 25 children in the class also gets its three highest school-registered scorers into Level 2.

e. Rs. 275 in India, or USD 15 elsewhere, pays for the exam and two online practice tests. Booking happens on the dashboard and every change to a booked slot costs Rs. 40.

1. Fractions join the mental work. Class 3 adds Fractions to the list, so children learn to compare one-third with two-thirds in their heads, and to order and add simple fractions, not only whole numbers.

2. Bigger numbers, faster. The prep guide moves from numbers below 100 to numbers below 1000 and stretches the tables from 2-10 to 2-20. Holding a three-digit number in the head while working on it is a real step up.

3. A Class 3 record to aim at. A Hall of Fame profile shows Mental Maths International Rank 1 in Class 3, in 2023-24. The same profile lists further CREST ranks in other subjects.

The Mental Maths Olympiad syllabus for class 3 adds a sixth topic to last year's five: Number and Number Names, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Fractions, Measurement and Geometry.

Fractions is the only new name; the other five carry on from Class 2, and nothing is dropped. Inside the topics the numbers grow. The Class 3 prep guide works with numbers below 1000 in hundreds, tens and ones and in expanded form, tables from 2 to 20, factors and multiples, words such as dozen, score and century, and acute, obtuse, right and straight angles.

At 80 questions the paper is longer too while the hour stays the same. Marks total 100 from 60 one-mark Basique questions and 20 two-mark Avance questions, leaving 45 seconds for each question. Level 2 is a copy of this pattern and marks are never taken away for errors.

Class 3 is when speed starts to matter: at 45 seconds a question there is little time to write anything down. Work on two things side by side.

First, the new numbers. Read and compare three-digit numbers aloud, split them into hundreds, tens and ones, and double or halve them. Learn the tables up to 20 a few at a time.

Second, fractions. Fold paper into halves, thirds and eighths, shade parts, and ask which shaded part is bigger. Add like fractions such as two-fifths and one-fifth without a pencil.

After that, the class 3 Mental Maths sample papers show the real question style. They ask for the product of 19 and 17, the difference between bags of 25 kg 225 g and 17 kg 875 g, and how many metres make 5 km. Time ten questions at a go, in about seven and a half minutes.

Class 3 CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO) answer key dates can be checked on the website. Answer keys are released on the answer key dates shown on the exam schedule. Students who all appeared for the exam can only check the answer key.

The Class 3 Mental Maths Olympiad Level 1 results usually turn up within 10 days of the last Level 1 answer key date, and the Level 2 results within a month of the last Level 2 answer key date, for anyone signed in with the details from registration.

CREST ranks each child twice, once within one of five zones (East, West, North, South, International) and once worldwide.
