a. The Maths Olympiad for Nursery is meant for little ones aged 3 to 4 years. If your child is in Nursery at any school, under CBSE, ICSE, IB, a State Board or any other board, they can take part.
b. You can register your child on your own, or the school can enrol the whole class. Families from any country are welcome. Since CREST started in 2019, children from more than 60 countries have taken part.
c. Nobody expects a three-year-old to sit alone in front of a screen. The Nursery exam is parent/teacher assisted: you may read the question aloud and help your child understand it, and then your child picks the answer.
d. The exam happens at home, online, on a laptop, desktop or tablet (screen larger than 11.5 inches) with a working webcam; a Windows device needs Windows 8 or above, while a Mac or an iPad works as well. The webcam stays on through the test. Use a stable internet connection and the latest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work; Safari does not). Mobile phones cannot be used.
e. There are two levels. Level 1 comes first, and children who score 60% or more in it move on to Level 2.
f. Not sure how your child will take to it? Take the free trial test first. It is a replica of the main exam, so you both get a feel for the screen before paying.
1. Early number sense, built through play. The Nursery paper is full of pictures: which tree is taller, which number comes after 7, which shape is a circle. Children start to notice numbers and shapes around the house.
2. A gentle first taste of a test. Sitting next to a parent, answering one picture question at a time, is a calm way to meet a new kind of task. There is no ranking at this stage, so the day is about trying, not about competing.
3. Curiosity that carries into school. Words like same, different, before and after turn up again in Junior KG, Senior KG and Class 1 Maths. A child who has met them early usually walks into those lessons a little more sure of themselves.
4. Something to show for the effort. Every child gets a Digital Participation Certificate on the dashboard, and children who score 60% or more in Level 2 receive a Star Medal and a Merit Certificate.

Then comes the Achievers Section. Its Higher Order Thinking Questions use the very same topics, just asked in a way that needs a closer look, so there is nothing extra to learn.
Paper format: 45 minutes, 25 questions, 30 marks in total, and no change between Level 1 and Level 2. Since CMO has no negative marking, a wrong answer never takes marks away.

At this age, preparation should feel like play. Ten or fifteen minutes a day is plenty. Sit with your child, keep the session light, and stop while they are still enjoying it.
Start with things at home. Ask which glass is big and which is small, open and close a door together, and play a quick sit-and-stand game. Line up toys and count to 20. Ask "what comes after 12?" while climbing the stairs. Cut a circle, square, triangle and rectangle out of cardboard and play find-the-shape.
Once these feel easy, open the Nursery Maths Olympiad sample papers. They are picture based, like the real exam. Read each question aloud, let your child point to the answer, and don't correct too quickly. The Achievers questions use the same topics, so talk through why an answer is right.
The real paper allows about 108 seconds per question (25 questions in 45 minutes), so there is no rush. A practice run on the computer still helps a small child get used to the screen and the webcam, and the free practice test is made for exactly that. For printed picture practice, look through the CREST workbooks on the Olympiad books page.
