Benefits of Maths Olympiad for Class 5

1. Comfortable with decimals and big numbers. Class 5 brings 7 and 8 digit numbers, fractions and decimals together. Olympiad practice makes children quicker and more accurate with them.

2. School topics with a twist. A Class 5 reviewer told CREST that the exam gives questions from the child's own class but twists them a bit, and that this twist is what it does well. It is also what builds real understanding.

3. Speed against the clock. Class 5 is the first year with 50 questions in 60 minutes. Learning to pace a paper now helps in every exam that follows.

4. A step towards later exams. Competing with students from many countries gives a Class 5 student an early feel for the competitive exams they may take in higher classes.

Class 5 Maths Olympiad Syllabus

Plenty is new in Class 5. Numbers jump from 5 digits straight to 7 and 8 digits, Decimals sit alongside Fractions, and Angles and the Area of Rectangle and Square appear for the first time. Temperature, missing from the Class 4 list, is back.

Section 1 of the class 5 Maths Olympiad syllabus starts with Numerals, Number Names and Number Sense (7 and 8 digit numbers) and Computation Operations, then moves to Fractions and Decimals. Measurement of Length, Weight, Capacity, Time, Temperature and Money comes next, together with Conversions. The shape topics are Geometrical Shapes and Solids, Angles, Perimeter of Various Shapes & Area of Rectangle and Square, and Symmetry, and the list ends with Data Handling.

The Achievers Section raises the bar with tougher, Higher Order Thinking Questions, but on these same topics.

Class 5 is also the first year of a longer paper: 50 questions in 60 minutes, for 60 marks. Level 1 and Level 2 are identical in format, and nothing is deducted for a wrong answer. To see how this compares with Class 4 or Class 6, open the CREST Maths Olympiad syllabus for every class.

How to prepare for Class 5 Maths Olympiad?

For Class 5, give yourself around two months. The syllabus is longer than last year's, and the paper is longer too.

Begin with large numbers. Read and write 7 and 8 digit numbers, compare them, and practise the place value of each digit. Then spend a full week on fractions and decimals: converting between them, adding them and comparing them. Angles and area come next: measure angles with a protractor, and find the area of rectangles and squares drawn on squared paper. Keep measurement and conversions as a daily 10-minute warm-up.

Once a topic is done, test it with the class 5 Maths Olympiad sample papers. Save the previous year paper for the end, as a dress rehearsal.

Timing matters more now. Sixty minutes for 50 questions leaves you about 72 seconds per question. One Class 5 reviewer summed up CREST as good questions and a nice time limit, which is fair, but only if you have practised at that pace. Do full papers with a stopwatch, and attempt the free trial.

Back in Class 4, one CREST achiever took CMO International Rank 3, and his method was simple: thorough study with regular practice (see his Hall of Fame profile). For that practice, the CREST workbook is on the Maths Olympiad books page. Prefer a live teacher? Olympiad Success online classes come from the official preparation partner of CREST.
