Competition of International Drawing Olympiad for Class 5

For Class 5, the CREST International Drawing Olympiad (CIDO) returns to UN SDG 14 - Life Below Water. This time the topics look at what lives in the sea and at how people use it: Ocean Food Web, Aqua Culture, Ocean Pollution, Draw Ocean Creatures and two posters, Save Water Save Life and SDG 14 Life Below Water.

One topic is new to CIDO: Sketching - Underwater Sea Black & White. With no colour to rely on, the picture depends on light and heavy pencil pressure, cross-hatching for dark water, and white paper left for light coming through the waves. It is worth giving this topic a practice week of its own.

Students draw alone and fully in view of the webcam for 60 minutes. This one sheet decides ranks and awards, and entry costs INR 275 in India or USD 15 for students living abroad.

a. Class 5 artists can join CIDO whatever their board or country. Sign up through a participating school, or on the CREST website as an individual.

b. Webcam monitoring is how CREST runs the International Drawing Olympiad for Class 5 at home. Your child draws alone and stays fully in frame, and no second person may sign in to the test.

c. The computer can be a laptop or desktop or tablet as long as its webcam can see the drawing and its screen is bigger than 11.5 inches, and, if it is a Windows device, it must run Windows 8 or above; a Mac or an iPad is acceptable too. Keep the internet steady and Google Chrome updated to its latest version; Edge or Firefox will also do, Safari will not, and neither will a mobile.

d. In Class 5 the one drawing in the one level decides ranks and awards.

e. Entry costs INR 275 for students in India and USD 15 for those living abroad, and the free trial can be taken before paying.

1. A first black-and-white sketch. Sketching - Underwater Sea Black & White is the first sketching topic in CIDO. Working without colour makes a child think about shading, line and contrast.

2. The ocean as a system. Topics such as Ocean Food Web and Aqua Culture ask for a picture that shows how living things connect, not just what they look like.

3. New tools, new confidence. New technology comes up in one Class 5 testimonial, which finds CREST good for communicating with it, and a drawing exam that ends with a photo or scan upload is a practical example of that.

4. A fair yardstick. Percentiles, zonal ranks and school ranks show where a drawing stands among others in the class.

1. International Drawing Olympiad Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a webcam and a good internet facility. Use a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches: a Windows computer or tablet running Windows 8 or above, a Mac, or an iPad. Phones cannot be used. Use the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work); the exam cannot be taken on the Safari browser. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Water returns as the theme of the International Drawing Olympiad syllabus for Class 5. The goal is UN SDG 14 - Life Below Water, and the list below has eight topics.

Goal 14 is about conserving the oceans, seas and marine resources and using them sustainably, in the words CREST uses for this class. The Class 5 list looks at both halves of that: what lives in the sea (creatures, a food web, marine life) and how people use or harm it (aqua culture, pollution, wasted water).

Class 1 was the last class on SDG 14, and Class 5 takes it much further. Sketching - Underwater Sea Black & White is the first sketching topic on any CIDO list, and Scenery - Marine Life is a full scene. Posters drop to two, Save Water Save Life and SDG 14 Life Below Water, after five in Class 4.

Some titles ask for more than a picture of a thing. Ocean Food Web is about links between creatures, so arrows or a chain of eaters and eaten belong in it. Aqua Culture is people raising water life, so ponds, tanks or nets and the workers who tend them fit the theme. Ocean Pollution and Draw Ocean Creatures are open, which leaves room for Originality/Creativity, worth 20 marks.

The paper: one drawing, 60 minutes, 100 marks, and no Level 2.

Message Conveyed and Title/Caption are 10 marks each, Theme Adherence and Quality of Scan 15 each, and Originality/Creativity 20. The largest category, Neatness and Composition at 30 marks, takes in layout, balance, overall impact, line quality, colouring and shading, detailing and craftsmanship. On the black-and-white topic, shading has to do the work colour usually does.

Your child will need an HB pencil, sharpener, eraser and drawing board, a white A4 drawing sheet (210 mm by 297 mm), and colours as required: crayons, oil pastels, pencil colours, or pastel colours and a painting brush. A 1 cm border goes round the sheet, the drawing must stay within it, and the name, CREST ID and class are written outside the border at the bottom left.

A clean, flat surface helps keep pencil lines sharp, with no broken lines or loose marks. Every 7-10 minutes the drawing is shown to the camera; this lets the committee track it, and skipping it may lead to disqualification.

The finished sheet is photographed or scanned for upload. A photo should show only the drawing, on a plain background and in high resolution; a scan should have no grey shades or scanner marks. Adobe Scan or Microsoft Office Scan is recommended, and the file must be .jpg, .jpeg or .png and no more than 10 MB. The upload screen gives 5 minutes after the exam is submitted, and missing it may lead to disqualification.

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Spread Class 5 practice over five weeks, with two drawings in each.

Start with the creatures and scenes: Draw Ocean Creatures, Scenery - Marine Life and Ocean Food Web. For the food web, try arrows from small fish to bigger fish so the links are obvious. Aqua Culture can show a fish farm pond with nets and workers.

Give the black-and-white sketch a week of its own. Practise light and heavy pencil pressure, cross-hatching for dark water, and leaving white paper for light coming through the waves.

Then do the issue topics: Ocean Pollution and the two posters, Save Water Save Life and SDG 14 Life Below Water. A title of no more than 6 words, inside the border, is enough.

Finally, give one topic from the Class 5 International Drawing Olympiad sample papers the full 60 minutes, with the sheet shown to the webcam every few minutes. Fit the free trial into that last stretch; it is a replica of the main exam and returns feedback on the drawing.

Zones matter in these results. India is split into four zones (East, West, North and South), all other countries are grouped in a fifth zone called International, and ranks are worked out in each zone as well as overall. A top-10 place in a zone is enough for gold, and so is any drawing that reaches the 96th percentile or goes higher, or a drawing that comes in the top three among a school's own registrations, if the school puts in more than 25 from the class.

A drawing that lands between the 93rd and 96th percentile wins silver; slightly lower, from the 90th to the 93rd, it wins bronze. Each of the three highest-placed drawings worldwide wins its artist an Achiever's Trophy plus a Merit Certificate.

In Class 6 the theme changes to UN SDG 2 - Zero Hunger, with doodle and collage topics.

1. CREST Olympiads offers students fascinating awards. The top 50% of scorers are rewarded.

3. School Ranks 1-3 (the top 3 students registered through school, from every school with more than 25 students in a class) receive a Gold Medal and a Merit Certificate.
4. All students with a 96 percentile or higher, as well as students with a zonal rank of 10 or less, receive a Gold Medal and a Merit Certificate.
5. All students with a percentile of 93 to 96 receive a Silver Medal and a Merit Certificate.
6. All students with a percentile of 90 to 93 receive a Bronze Medal and a Merit Certificate.
7. A Merit Certificate is given to the top 25% of students.
8. A digital certificate with the words "Honourable Mention" is given to the top 25% to 50% of students.
