Eligibility Criteria for Class 10 International English Olympiad

a. Choose your slot on the dashboard early; it has to be booked 2 days or more before the exam. Ten minutes before that time, the "Click To Take Exam" button lights up.

b. The class 10 English Olympiad has two levels, and Level 1 works as the qualifier. A result in the top 55.56% for Class 10 earns a Level 2 seat, and so does being one of the three leading school-registered students at any school with more than 25 students in the class.

c. Your school may enter you, or you can sign up independently. Any recognised board counts, CBSE, ICSE and State Boards among them, and students abroad are welcome.

d. The paper is yours alone: taken at home with the webcam running, on a laptop, desktop or tablet bigger than 11.5 inches, over a stable internet connection. Every Windows device needs Windows 8 or above; a Mac or an iPad will serve equally well. Use the latest Google Chrome, or Edge or Firefox, but not Safari. A phone cannot replace that device, and calculators and mobile phones must stay out of reach.

Class 10 English Olympiad Syllabus

At 27 topics, the class 10 English Olympiad syllabus is a little shorter than the 29 of Class 9. Compared with Class 9, it drops Pronouns, Jumbled Words and Reported Speech from the list, and Narrations now sits beside Voices. The vocabulary moves to weather, countries, language and people, and global problems. Reading questions reach encyclopaedias and advanced texts, and the expressions add compliments and pronunciation.

Section 1

Those 27 topics also supply the Achievers Section, where each Higher Order Thinking Question carries 2 marks.

In both levels you will see a 60-minute paper of 50 questions worth 60 marks, and 20 of those marks sit in the 10 Achievers questions. There is no negative marking. As in every class, the Oxford Learner's Dictionary is the reference for spellings and meanings.

How to prepare for Class 10 English Olympiad?

Board exams are on your mind in Class 10, so fit Olympiad practice in alongside them. Six to eight weeks of four 45-minute sessions a week is enough if you are regular.

Much of the Class 10 grammar overlaps with your school book: tenses, voices, narrations, conditionals, modals and concord. Revise them with mixed exercises rather than one topic at a time. For vocabulary, learn words by theme (weather, countries, global problems) and keep revising idioms, phrasal verbs and collocations. For reading, practise with an encyclopaedia entry, an editorial and an essay each week, answering questions within a set time.

Then work through the class 10 English Olympiad sample papers and the previous year paper in the table. Mark every doubtful spelling and confirm it in the Oxford Learner's Dictionary.

You get 60 minutes for 50 questions, or 72 seconds each. Do two or three full timed papers and the free trial test before the exam.

A student who topped the CREST English Olympiad internationally in Class 10, and in Classes 7 and 8 before that, made his timetable well in advance, kept his other priorities in view, and then stuck to it (his Hall of Fame profile has the details). Use the CREST English workbook for chapter-wise practice, and if you want more, Olympiad Success, which CREST calls its official preparation partner, runs an online Olympiad trainer.
