Benefits of Class 7 Spell Bee Competition

1. One book, both levels. From Class 7 every word for Level 1 and Level 2 comes from Wren and Martin's High School English Grammar and Composition, so the same reading prepares you for both papers.

2. Speed and sound. Rapid Fire makes up 20 of the 80 questions, and Word Melody asks you to write words from their phonetics, so you practise spelling what you hear as well as what you read.

3. Peers to look up to. Second place internationally in the Class 7 Spell Bee (Summer) of 2022-23 is on record in a Hall of Fame profile.

4. A smooth experience. One Class 7 review, written when the Spell Bee was the only CREST exam taken so far, already vouches for CREST, calling the website user friendly and the conduct of the exams professional. Spell Bee Competition Syllabus for Class 7

From Class 7 the Spell Bee leaves word lists behind. The Spell Bee syllabus for class 7 points to one book instead, Wren and Martin's High School English Grammar and Composition, and is set out in two sections:

Section 1: Spell Bee Competition Words for Class 7

  • Every Level 1 and Level 2 word is drawn from the Wren and Martin book.

Section 2

  • Rapid Fire: an audio round in which each word is heard and its spelling written down, again using words from the same book.

So how is this different from Class 6? The Class 6 syllabus had a long word list of its own and also included the Class 1-5 lists. In Class 7 the book takes the place of all of them, for both levels.

Every spelling is marked by British English rules, and when in doubt CREST turns first to the Oxford Learner's Dictionary. Words not found in that dictionary do not count as words for this test.

Format: 80 questions, 80 marks and one hour, identical across both levels, with a mark per question and no negative marking. Rapid Fire is the largest section at 20 questions; Word Makeup and Word Cookie have 10 each, Word Connection, Word Ensemble and Mathlish 8 each, Spell-o-Spell 6, Word Melody 4, and Mingle-Mangle and PictureSpeak 3 each. Read the class 7 Spell Bee marking scheme for what each section asks.

How to prepare for Class 7 Spell Bee Competition?

Your source this year is a single book, Wren and Martin's High School English Grammar and Composition. Plan to read it steadily rather than all at once: a chapter or two a week from the time you register.

Keep a spelling notebook as you read. Every word you hesitate over goes in it, with its meaning from the Oxford Learner's Dictionary. Where British and American spellings differ, write the British form, because that is the one CREST marks correct.

Twice a week, have someone dictate twenty words from your notebook at a steady pace while you write. That is your Rapid Fire practice, and it is a quarter of the paper.

Word Ensemble covers idioms and proverbs, and Word Makeup covers prefixes, suffixes and compound words, so note those as you meet them in the book.

In the last month, work through the class 7 Spell Bee sample papers under real exam timing. At 45 seconds a question (eighty in the hour), one hard word must not hold you up; nothing is subtracted for a wrong spelling, so give every question an answer.
