a. From Class 5 the Cyber paper is longer, but entry stays simple. Students of any board and any country can apply, through the school or individually.
b. The hour is spent alone in front of the webcam. If another person sits in or accesses the test, or a calculator, mobile or other electronic device is used, CREST can disqualify the attempt.
c. Test the setup a few days early: screen above 11.5 inches, camera working, internet stable, browser up to date (the latest Google Chrome, or Edge or Firefox; Safari will not run it). Leave the phone out of it; the platform needs a laptop, desktop or tablet: a Windows 8 or newer machine, a Mac or an iPad.
d. The Cyber Olympiad for class 5 has one level only, and the ranks and awards are calculated from it.
e. On exam day, the "Click To Take Exam" button under Book Slot/Take Exam becomes active 10 minutes before the booked time, so be seated a little early.
1. Staying safe online. Cyber Security and Safety appears for the first time, naming malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware) and risks such as phishing, identity theft, cyberstalking and cyberbullying. Class 3 listed antivirus software; Class 5 names what it protects against.
2. Spreadsheets for real. MS Excel gets a full unit: formatting cells, formulas and functions, managing worksheets, and charts.
3. How networks reach your home. PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G-5G and NFC, and the internet service providers families already pay for make the internet less abstract.
4. In step with new technology. A published Class 5 testimonial says CREST is good for communicating with new technology, and a second Class 5 review praises the good questions and the nice time limit.

Sit with your child for the Office units first. In Word, add a drop cap, a header and footer, SmartArt and a table; in PowerPoint, insert a picture and run the slideshow in each view; in Excel, format some cells, write a SUM formula and turn the numbers into a chart. Then open Task Manager together and look at the Processes, Performance, App History, Startup Apps and Users tabs.
The safety unit goes better as talk than as reading. Discuss what phishing looks like, why a stranger's link should not be clicked, and what cyberbullying is. Ask how you log in to a phone or a bank app, which opens up authentication. Make a small table of PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN with an example of each.
A CREST rank holder who was International Rank 1 in the Class 5 Cyber Olympiad (2020-21) relied on thorough study with regular practice, as the Hall of Fame page records. For this list, that means a little every day rather than a lot at once.
Use the Class 5 Cyber Olympiad sample papers unit by unit and then as full timed papers, add CREST's own Class 5 Cyber workbook (listed under Olympiad books), and take the free trial at least once before the exam.
