Eligibility Criteria for Class 3 International English Olympiad

a. Class 3 children can be entered by their school or registered individually on the CREST website, whether they live in India or abroad.

b. The board makes no difference. CBSE, ICSE, IB and State Board children all sit the same class 3 English Olympiad.

c. Your child answers alone, at home, on a laptop, desktop or tablet whose screen is larger than 11.5 inches; a Windows machine needs Windows 8 or later, while a Mac or an iPad is fine. A working webcam, a stable internet connection and the latest Google Chrome (or Edge or Firefox, not Safari) are required, and a mobile phone will not work.

d. You pick the exam slot yourself on the dashboard, at least 2 days ahead of the exam. Flexible slots get a mention in one Class 3 testimonial, which notes that working parents can then see their child sit the computer-based practice tests and the main exam.

e. Two levels, and two routes into the second one. The first route is a Level 1 score in the top 66.67% of all Class 3 candidates. The second applies to schools with more than 25 Class 3 students in the exam: their three highest scorers who registered through the school also qualify.

Benefits of English Olympiad for Class 3

1. A bigger word bank. Homophones, proverbs, one-word substitutes, and synonyms and antonyms all join the list in Class 3. A child who knows "their" from "there" and can swap "a person who writes books" for "author" writes more precisely.

2. Reading timetables and messages. Information retrieval now includes anecdotes, pictures and time-table formats, the kind of everyday reading a child also meets outside the classroom.

3. Something different from the textbook. In one Class 3 review, the Olympiad is described as a real help to improve and as quite unlike the usual books.

4. A fair comparison. Ranks are worked out in five zones (East, West, North, South and International) as well as internationally, so a Class 3 child sees how they compare with peers nearby and abroad.

Class 3 English Olympiad Syllabus

Class 3 widens vocabulary more than grammar. Compared with Class 2, the new topics are Word Power: Homophones, Synonyms and Antonyms, Gender, Number (Singular and Plural Words), Proverbs, One Word and Basic Questions. Contractions and Word Order are not in the Class 3 list. Reading texts now include anecdotes, pictures and time-table formats, and the expressions cover apology and request.

Here, in order, are the twenty-two Section 1 topics listed in the class 3 English Olympiad syllabus: Word Power: Homophones, Collocations, Spellings, Words (Related to Animals, Household Things, Clothes, Basic Emotions, Food, Animals and Pets, etc.), Synonyms and Antonyms, Gender, Number (Singular and Plural Words), Proverbs, One Word, Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Articles, Prepositions, Simple Tenses, Conjunctions, Punctuation, Basic Questions, Information Retrieval from Various Texts (Stories, Anecdotes, Pictures, Time-table Format, Messages, Invitations, etc.), Spoken and Written Expressions (Apology, Greeting, Introduction, Request, etc.).

Ten two-mark Higher Order Thinking Questions then make up the Achievers Section, and they too stay within those twenty-two topics.

A Class 3 child has 60 minutes to answer 35 questions, for a total of 45 marks. Twenty-five questions are worth 1 mark and ten are worth 2. Both levels use this pattern, and a wrong answer simply scores zero. Spellings and word meanings follow the Oxford Learner's Dictionary. Proverbs and one-word substitutes stick more easily when children meet them in stories, so reading time counts as preparation too.

How to prepare for Class 3 English Olympiad?

Six weeks, with three or four sessions a week of 25 minutes each, is a comfortable plan for Class 3.

Give vocabulary the most attention, since that is where this class grows. Keep a homophones notebook (sea and see, flour and flower). Learn two proverbs a week and use them at dinner. Practise one-word substitutes as a quick quiz: a place where books are kept? A library. Pair synonyms and antonyms in a card game. For reading, hand your child a school timetable or a party invitation and ask three questions about it.

Once the homophones notebook has a few pages, your child can begin the class 3 English Olympiad sample papers. Do them in full, check the answers, and write each wrong word into the notebook.

Each of the 35 questions gets a little over a minute and a half, as the paper lasts 60 minutes. In the last two weeks, practise full papers against the clock and take the free practice test once, alone, as on the real day.

For structured practice, the CREST English workbook has chapter-wise explanations and plenty of questions. Olympiad Success, the Olympiad trainer that CREST names as its official preparation partner, also has preparation material for Olympiad exams.

One last habit for Class 3: read aloud for ten minutes every evening. It costs nothing, and it helps with spellings, punctuation and the reading questions all at once.
