Logical thinking is a superpower that your first-grader can develop through this CREST Reasoning Olympiad. We test reasoning through interesting puzzles and patterns.
CREST Olympiads is one of the World's Leading Online Olympiad Organizations. The goal of this initiative is to assess students' knowledge and assist them in applying their learning to various fields while also developing their analytical skills so that they are confident enough to face any competitive examination. CREST Reasoning Olympiad (CRO) is one of the best international Reasoning Olympiads organized by CREST Olympiads for students of class 1 to improve their thinking and reasoning skills.

a. CRO is held for Classes 1 to 10, so Class 1 is the youngest class that can sit the Reasoning Olympiad. A child from any board, whether CBSE, ICSE, a State Board or another, and from any country can take part.
b. CREST works with 6000+ schools. If your child's school registers its students, enter through the school; if it does not, you can sign your child up yourself on the CREST website.
c. A parent or teacher assists the child throughout the Class 1 paper. Sit next to your child and help them make sense of a question when needed, then let them choose the answer on their own.
d. Everything happens online at home, on a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches and a working webcam that stays on for the whole paper; Windows 8 or above, a Mac or an iPad will do. A phone cannot be used, and the latest Google Chrome is the browser to use (Edge or Firefox also work; Safari does not). Make sure the internet connection is stable.
e. Only one level is held for the Reasoning Olympiad for class 1. The Level 1 paper is the final exam, so your child does not have to qualify for anything after it.
f. Not sure yet? The free trial test is a replica of the main exam, and your child can try it before you pay the fee.
1. Puzzles that feel like play. Odd One Out, Pattern and Grouping of Figures ask a Class 1 child to look closely and decide what belongs together. Presented as games at home, they are easy to start practising.
2. Words for place and order. Spatial Understanding and Ranking Test give children practice with ideas like above and below, left and right, first and last, which they already use in class and at home.
3. A gentle first exam from home. A published Class 1 testimonial says the exam lets young children make an early start without much hassle, since it is taken online from home.
4. Every child is recognised. Class 1 is not ranked; a score of 60% or more earns a Star Medal and a Merit Certificate, and all participants receive a Digital Participation Certificate. A second Class 1 review credits CREST with building up a child's confidence and getting the child used to the computer.

The Reasoning Olympiad syllabus for class 1 keeps to nine picture-friendly topics under Section 1:
Section 1: Logical Reasoning
After Section 1, the Achievers Section adds ten Higher Order Thinking Questions worth two marks each, set on the same syllabus.
The Class 1 paper has 35 multiple-choice questions, an hour to answer them and 45 marks in all. Of those, 25 are Logical Reasoning questions at one mark apiece, and the remaining ten belong to the Achievers Section and earn two marks each. Nothing is deducted for a wrong choice. CRO has only one level, so this is the only paper your child takes.
Since CRO starts in Class 1, there is no lower class to compare with. One topic is special to this year: Spatial Understanding appears only in the Class 1 list and is not listed from Class 2 onwards.

Keep it playful. Fifteen to twenty minutes a day is plenty for a Class 1 child, and a game at the dinner table counts as practice.
Build each session around one topic. For Odd One Out, put an apple, a banana, a carrot and a mango in front of your child and ask which one does not belong, and why. For Pattern, lay out red, blue, red, blue blocks and let your child add the next two. Embedded Figures can become a hunt: draw a simple house and count the triangles hiding in it together. Ranking Test turns into a family queue (who is second from the front?), and Spatial Understanding is a game of placing a toy above, below, to the left of or to the right of a cup. For Analogy, try easy pairs: a bird lives in a nest as a dog lives in a kennel.
After two or three weeks of games, open the Reasoning Olympiad sample papers for class 1 and do a handful of questions side by side. Read each one aloud, point at the pictures, and then wait quietly while your child decides. Once the sample papers feel easy, the previous year paper in the table below works the same way.
The whole paper is 35 questions in an hour, which works out to about 103 seconds a question. Do not aim for the full hour at once; build up over two or three sittings. Then try the free trial test on the computer with the webcam on, so the real exam screen already looks familiar.
For extra practice, CREST's own Class 1 Reasoning workbook is listed in the table below and on the Olympiad books page. Extra mock tests for Class 1 can be bought from Olympiad Success online, which CREST lists as its official preparation partner.
