Benefits of Science Olympiad for Class 4

1. How things move and work. Force, Work and Energy is on the Class 4 list, so children start linking a push or a pull to the energy it takes, ideas that come back in Class 5.

2. Food and digestion. Following an apple from the mouth to the stomach is the kind of question that makes a Class 4 child curious about their own body.

3. Learning by exploring. A Class 4 review calls CREST a platform for children to learn, practise and explore their knowledge, and to develop creative thinking.

4. More interest in Science. Another Class 4 testimonial says the Olympiad creates more interest in the subject. Medals for the top percentiles and Achiever's Trophies for the three highest international ranks give that interest something to aim at.

Class 4 Science Olympiad Syllabus

Class 4 gives Plants and Animals separate places again. Food and Digestion, Clothing, and Force, Work and Energy are new headings, while Matter and Materials, Our Environment, and Earth and Universe continue from Class 3. Birds; Food, Housing and Clothing; Transport and Communication; and Human Body are not in the Class 4 list, and Light, Sound and Force gives way to Force, Work and Energy.

Section by section, the Science Olympiad syllabus for Class 4 reads:

Section 1

The Achievers Section then asks Higher Order Thinking Questions, all set within the Class 4 list.

Class 4 children get an hour for 35 questions, worth 45 marks. Section 1 has 25 questions worth 1 mark each, and the Achievers Section has 10 worth 2 marks each. The same pattern applies in Level 2, with no negative marking. The Class 4 Science Olympiad marking scheme sets this out in a table.

How to prepare for Class 4 Science Olympiad?

Plan for about two months. Class 4 is the last year with the 35-question paper, so it is a good time to build steady study habits before the paper grows.

Work through the list in a sensible order. Start with Plants and Animals, which your child already knows well. Then do Food and Digestion: draw the digestive system and trace a meal through it. For Clothing, check the labels at home for cotton, wool and polyester. Force, Work and Energy is easier with small experiments: roll a ball on a carpet and on tiles, and talk about why it slows down sooner on one. Finish with Matter and Materials, Earth and Universe, and Our Environment.

One CREST rank holder took CSO International Rank 2 in Class 4. His Hall of Fame profile sums up how he studied: he learned material before school taught it and followed his books with confidence. Reading a chapter ahead of class, then checking it against the sample papers, works well for this syllabus too.

Need more papers or a teacher? Olympiad Success, which CREST lists as its preparation partner, offers a Science Olympiad mock test series for Class 4 and one-to-one online classes.

Keep the last few days light: one short revision of each topic, one last sample paper, a final look at the digestive system diagram, and an early night before the exam.
