d. It is a home exam, online and proctored through your webcam. Work alone, on any laptop, desktop or tablet with more than 11.5 inches of screen; the exam will not run on a phone.
e. For Class 8 the English Olympiad runs in two stages, Level 1 and Level 2. Finishing in the top 55.56% of Class 8 in Level 1 is the main way into Level 2. The other way is through your school: where more than 25 students from one school sit Class 8, the three highest scorers among those registered by the school go through as well.
1. Grammar at phrase level. Class 8 introduces Prepositional Phrases, Participle Phrases, Determiners and Question Tags, the finer points that separate correct English from polished English.
2. Grown-up reading. Information retrieval in Class 8 uses news reports, blurbs, dictionary entries, instruction manuals, editorials and essays.
3. Less rote learning. One Class 8 testimonial points out that memorised answers do not get you far: the questions check concepts and ask you to apply them, which builds analytical and critical thinking.
4. An early look at competition. For students about to step into competitive exams, says one Class 8 reviewer, CREST offers a first view of that world and an honest read of their own level.

Class 8 adds finer grammar. Compared with Class 7, Proverbs, Prepositional Phrases, Participle Phrases, Determiners, Jumbled Words and Question Tags are new. Modals and Word Order are not in the Class 8 list, and Spellings now appears only inside Analogies and Spellings. Reading questions use news reports, blurbs, dictionaries, instruction manuals, editorials and essays, and the expressions now include expressing surprise and pronunciation.
The Class 8 English Olympiad syllabus sets out all twenty-eight topics:
Then comes the Achievers Section, whose Higher Order Thinking Questions use those same twenty-eight topics.
Format: a one-hour paper of 50 questions, worth 60 marks in all. The English Language section has 40 one-mark questions and the Achievers Section 10 two-mark questions. Level 2 mirrors it, and marks are never taken off for mistakes. CREST settles spelling and meaning questions with the Oxford Learner's Dictionary.

Start about two months ahead with five sessions a week of 45 minutes to an hour. Split each week between grammar, vocabulary and reading.
The new grammar needs focused practice. Write ten question tags a day ("You are coming, aren't you?"). Underline prepositional and participle phrases in a newspaper article. Sort determiners (each, every, few, a little) into rules you can explain. Learn proverbs in pairs with their meanings. For reading, skim an editorial for its main argument, then scan an instruction manual for a single fact.
With the grammar drilled, take on the class 8 English Olympiad sample papers, followed by last year's paper. The 2019-20 International Rank 1 holder in the Class 8 English Olympiad gave equal weight to theory and to solving problems. The order was basics, then theory, then past papers, on a strict daily routine with 15-minute breaks (see the Hall of Fame profile).
The clock gives you 72 seconds a question across the 50 questions of the hour. In the final two weeks, do full timed papers and take the free trial test.
The CREST English workbook covers the topics chapter by chapter. Olympiad Success, CREST's official preparation partner, keeps further material on its Olympiad trainer website.
Keep a running error log through these weeks. Every time a question tag, a determiner or a proverb catches you out, write the correct version down and read the list again the night before the exam.
