a. Senior KG is the entry point for CSB, which then runs all the way to Class 8. CBSE, ICSE, IB or a State Board: the board a school follows makes no difference to eligibility, and the family's home country makes no difference either.
b. Entry can come through the school or through you. Children whose school has signed up with CREST are entered by the school, and everyone else is registered individually by a parent on the CREST website. CREST counts 6000+ schools and 60+ countries among its participants.
c. A parent or teacher stays beside the child for the whole paper. Read a question out or explain its meaning if your little one is stuck; the final choice of answer must come from your child.
d. Your child answers on a screen at home while the webcam watches the session. Have a laptop, desktop or tablet ready (display over 11.5 inches; a Mac, an iPad or a Windows device on Windows 8 or above) with its webcam switched on, a stable broadband connection and the newest release of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox are fine too, Safari is not); a phone is not allowed for this paper.
e. Two rounds make up the Spell Bee competition for Senior KG, and 60% or more in the first round, Level 1, earns a seat in Level 2.
f. The fee is Rs. 275 in India and USD 15 for children studying abroad. Before paying, the free trial test is worth a go; CREST built it as a copy of the main exam.
1. Rhymes that turn into spellings. Much of the Senior KG list is made of word families such as -at, -op and -ot, so a child who can spell cat is only one letter away from hat, mat and bat. The paper even has a Rhyme Chime section where children find words that rhyme.
2. Small words met everywhere. Thirty sight words, from the and was to who and why, are part of the list. They are the short words that turn up again and again in early reading.
3. Play, not drills. The Senior KG paper is split into eight short sections with names like Jumble Jungle, Letter Treasure and Alphabet Oddball, where children unscramble letters, find hidden words in a grid and spot the odd word out.
4. A gentle first contest. The writer of a published Senior KG review is grateful that Senior KG children get to take part, and finds the topics helpful for what is taught in regular class. Nobody is ranked at this age. Instead, the Star Medal is the goal: it goes, with a Merit Certificate, to every Senior KG child on 60% or more in Level 2.

Everything in the Spell Bee syllabus for Senior KG sits in one word list, grouped like this:
A few words from it: hen, pen and ten in the -en family, dig, hug and jog among the action words, and sight words such as was and you. Some questions, up to 20%, can bring in words from beyond it.
Answers are marked to British English. The Oxford Learner's Dictionary is CREST's first reference for how words are spelt and what they mean, and anything that dictionary lacks is not accepted as a word for this test.
Paper format: 25 questions in 45 minutes, one mark each, so 25 marks in all, and Level 2 uses exactly the same pattern as Level 1. The questions sit in eight sections: Spell-o-Magic (4), Alphabet Quest (2), Rhyme Chime (4), Picture Speak (3), Letter Treasure (4), Alphabet Oddball (2), Jumble Jungle (4) and Word Link Express (2). The Senior KG Spell Bee marking scheme explains each one. CSB never takes marks away for a wrong pick.
With no CSB class below Senior KG, nothing here can be compared with an earlier list. The word families and sight words appear only here; from Class 1 the headings change to themes such as Animals, Colours and Body Parts.

Ten easy minutes each day is enough at Senior KG age. Treat spelling as a shared game and end each round on a happy note.
Begin with the word families. Write -at on a card and let your child put c, h, m or b in front of it to make cat, hat, mat and bat. Do the same with -op (hop, mop, pop, top) and -ot (dot, hot, pot), saying each word aloud before your child spells it.
Sight words come next. Stick five of them on the fridge each week, for example the, was, who, why and you, and read them together at breakfast.
Then play the sections. Say a word and ask for one that rhymes, as in Rhyme Chime. Mix up the letters of cup or box for your child to put right, as in Jumble Jungle. Draw a small grid of letters with a word hidden inside for a Letter Treasure hunt.
Once a few weeks have passed, sit with your child over the Spell Bee sample papers for Senior KG, reading every question aloud. The paper allows about 1 minute 48 seconds a question (45 minutes for 25 questions), so nobody needs to hurry.
Last of all, open the free trial on the computer you will use, camera switched on, so nothing on the day looks strange. CREST also sells a Spell Bee (Summer) workbook made for Senior KG; it is listed on the Olympiad books page if your child enjoys working on paper.

Since the examination is parent/teacher assisted, no ranking system is followed. Every candidate scoring 60% or more in the final level examination is awarded a Star Medal and Merit Certificate. To maintain complete transparency, the answer key is released before the declaration of final results, and participants are also given the opportunity to challenge any question or answer in case of doubt.
The Senior KG Spell Bee Level 1 result usually reaches families within 10 days of the closing Level 1 answer key date, and the Level 2 result within a month of the last Level 2 answer key date. Your child's score is shown once you log in with the details used at registration.
You will see a score but no rank position. CREST keeps little kids free of that burden and treats these parent/teacher assisted papers as an early look at competitive exams.
Level 1 decides the next step: a score of 60% or more takes your child to Level 2. The Level 2 paper is the one that counts for awards, and scoring 60% or more on it brings home the Star Medal, together with a Merit Certificate. Whatever happens, your login also gives you a digital participation certificate to download.
Answer keys stay viewable on a few fixed dates only, so note those days down early. If you disagree with a key, raise a challenge from that same page. CREST charges Rs. 125 for each question challenged and returns it, plus 50 reward points, when the Academic Council rules in your favour.
a. Students scoring 60% or more in Level 2 will be awarded a Star Medal along with a Merit Certificate.
b. Other participants will receive a Digital Participation Certificate, accessible through their dashboard.
