Competition of International Drawing Olympiad for Class 3

A windmill, an electric vehicle, eco homes and trees along a street or around a school are among the Class 3 subjects in the CREST International Drawing Olympiad (CIDO). They come under UN SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy, and the list mixes these four pictures with four posters: Clean Air, Save Energy Save Earth, Energy Conservation and Clean Energy.

Save Energy Save Earth and Energy Conservation are close in meaning, so give each poster its own idea, for example a family switching off lights at home for one and a town lit by solar street lamps for the other. A child who knows how a windmill or an EV works can show it, with blades turning in the wind or a charging cable plugged in. Ideas like these count under Originality/Creativity, which carries 20 of the 100 marks.

The paper is one drawing in 60 minutes, made alone in front of the webcam and photographed or scanned for upload when time is up. There is no Level 2.

a. Class 3 children of every school board, anywhere in the world, can sign up through school or independently.

b. No adult sits in on a Class 3 exam. For the Drawing Olympiad, CREST allows that only in Senior KG and Class 1; after that, a person beside the child, or a face that leaves the camera view, can lead to disqualification.

c. Pick the drawing slot in the dashboard (Book Slot/Take Exam) with 2 clear days or more to spare. Reminders come by email or SMS 2-3 days ahead, and a slot can be changed for Rs. 40.

d. What you need at home: a webcam on a laptop or tablet or desktop whose screen goes past 11.5 inches (a Mac, an iPad, or a Windows device on Windows 8 or newer), plus an internet connection you can rely on. For the browser, pick the latest Google Chrome, or Edge or Firefox; Safari is not supported. Leave phones out of the plan.

e. The CREST International Drawing Olympiad for class 3 is held as a Level 1 paper alone.

SDG 7 is new in Class 3, replacing the climate goal of Class 2. The number of posters stays at four, now on clean air, saving energy, energy conservation and clean energy, while Windmill, Eco Homes, Trees in Surroundings and Draw EV Vehicle are pictures without a slogan.

Look at the small words in the titles. Eco Homes is plural, so more than one house fits. Trees in Surroundings is about where the trees are, a street, a school or a garden, not a single tree on a blank page. Draw EV Vehicle and Windmill are machines, and a child who knows how they work can add that detail: a plug, blades turning in the wind. Two posters share the idea of saving, Poster - Save Energy Save Earth and Poster - Energy Conservation, so it helps to plan a different picture for each, perhaps one about a single home and one about a whole town. Poster - Clean Air and Poster - Clean Energy are close cousins too.

The exam itself is one drawing, 60 minutes long and marked out of 100. No second level follows it.

Six categories add up to 100 marks. Originality/Creativity is worth 20 and Neatness and Composition 30, the second covering layout, balance, overall impact, line quality, colouring and shading, detailing and craftsmanship. Theme Adherence and Quality of Scan carry 15 each; Title/Caption and Message Conveyed carry 10 each.

A short checklist for the day:

• HB pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser and drawing board
• colours as required: pastel colours with a painting brush, crayons, oil pastels or pencil colours
• one white A4 drawing sheet, 210 mm by 297 mm, with a 1 cm border marked on it
• name, CREST ID and class written outside the border, at the bottom left corner
• a clean, flat place to draw, and pencil lines kept sharp, with no smudges or broken lines
• the drawing held up to the camera every 7-10 minutes so its completion can be tracked (skipping this may lead to disqualification)
• at the end, a high-resolution photo of the drawing alone on a plain background, or a scan with no grey shades or marks; Adobe Scan or Microsoft Office Scan is recommended
• a .jpg, .jpeg or .png file of no more than 10 MB, uploaded within 5 minutes of submitting the exam (a missed upload may lead to disqualification)

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Plan four weeks, with two practice drawings a week. Keep your hands off the pencil: you hold the timer and ask questions once the drawing is done.

Begin with the four non-poster topics. Windmill and Draw EV Vehicle practise clean lines and wheels; Eco Homes and Trees in Surroundings practise a full scene with a sky, ground and something in between. Ask your child what makes each home or car "clean", and add that detail, such as solar panels on the roof or a charging cable.

Then move to the posters. For Poster - Clean Air and Poster - Clean Energy, one large central picture with a short title works well. For Poster - Save Energy Save Earth and Poster - Energy Conservation, a simple before-and-after (a light left on, a light switched off) shows the message at a glance.

With two weeks to go, sit a timed paper from the Class 3 International Drawing Olympiad sample papers: one drawing, 60 minutes. Practise showing the sheet to the webcam every few minutes, then photograph or scan it the way you will on the day.

Leave the free trial for the final days; it runs like the real exam and sends back feedback on the drawing.

For Class 3, three things are worth knowing. An Achiever's Trophy, with a Merit Certificate, is awarded for each of the top three international places. A Merit Certificate also comes with any Class 3 drawing ranked inside the top 25%, and the next band down, 25% to 50%, earns an Honourable Mention certificate sent online. Finally, whatever the score, each online participant finds a participation certificate in digital form on the dashboard.

Next year, Class 4 brings life on land back as the theme, with the first scenery topic.
