a. Any Class 4 student can sit the Maths Olympiad for Class 4, whichever board the school follows: CBSE, ICSE, IB or a State Board.
b. Homeschooled? You can still take part. Individual registration is open, and one CREST family wrote that the exam helped their homeschooled son keep up with his peers. Children in schools can also be registered by the school.
c. Families in any country are welcome. CREST has been running Olympiads since 2019 and reaches students in more than 60 countries.
d. On exam day your child works alone at home. The webcam needs to show their face clearly all the time, and calculators and mobile phones must not be used.
e. Set up a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen of more than 11.5 inches. Google Chrome, kept up to date, is the browser to use; Edge or Firefox also work, but Safari is not supported.
f. Class 4 has two rounds: Level 1, and Level 2 for students who qualify.
1. Bigger numbers, more care. 5-digit place value and conversions between units train a Class 4 child to be careful with zeros and units, and that care shows in school tests too.
2. Geometry that makes sense. Perimeter and symmetry questions ask children to look at a shape and reason about it, not just recall a rule.
3. More interest in the subject. A Class 4 reviewer described CREST as a platform to showcase children's knowledge and ability, and said it was creating more interest in the subject.
4. A taste of competition that builds confidence. Results show where a child stands in their zone and internationally, and doing well motivates them to try harder next time.

Two changes stand out in Class 4. The number range widens to 5-digit numbers (Class 3 stopped at 4 digits), and three topics are added: Perimeter of Various Shapes, Symmetry and Conversions. Temperature drops out of the Class 4 list, while the remaining topics carry on from Class 3 with tougher questions. Conversions simply means changing between units, say kilograms and grams, or metres and centimetres.
Class 4 topics, as listed in the class 4 Maths Olympiad syllabus:
That list is Section 1. Then there is the Achievers Section: Higher Order Thinking Questions that stay inside the same list.
Format check: one hour, 35 questions, 45 marks at most. Level 2 copies the Level 1 pattern exactly, and wrong answers cost nothing.

Here is a simple six-week plan for the Class 4 Maths Olympiad.
Weeks 1 and 2: 5-digit numbers and computation. Practise place value, comparing and ordering, and multiplying and dividing without a calculator. Weeks 3 and 4: perimeter, symmetry and geometry. Draw shapes on grid paper, find their perimeter, and fold paper cut-outs to check lines of symmetry. Week 5: conversions (metres to centimetres, kilograms to grams, hours to minutes), fractions and data handling. Week 6: full papers.
Start each topic with the class 4 Maths Olympiad sample papers so you know what the questions look like. Then work through the class 4 Maths Olympiad books; the CREST workbook has plenty of practice questions. When he was in Class 4, one CREST rank holder liked to learn topics before school taught them and followed his books with confidence (read his Class 4 Hall of Fame profile). You don't need to race ahead, but reading a chapter early does help.
Watch your speed. There are 35 questions and 60 minutes, so roughly 1 minute 43 seconds each. If a symmetry question is eating your time, choose the likeliest answer and move on, since there is no negative marking. Take the free practice test, which copies the real exam, at least once. For chapter-wise practice, there are class 4 Maths Olympiad worksheets from Olympiad Success, CREST's official preparation partner.
