a. The Spelling Bee competition for class 3 is open to children of every school board, from CBSE and ICSE to State Boards and others, and to children in any country.
b. Schools can register their whole class with CREST. Where a school has not signed up, parents can register their child individually.
c. Spell Bee Winter is held at one level only. The Level 1 paper your child sits is the final one for the year.
d. The exam is online and webcam-proctored, taken at home. The setup CREST asks for is a stable internet connection, the newest version of Google Chrome (or Edge or Firefox, but not Safari), a webcam, and a laptop, desktop or tablet over 11.5 inches: a Windows machine on Windows 8 or above, a Mac or an iPad. Mobile devices are not permitted.
e. Class 3 children sit the paper unaided. A Class 3 child can be disqualified if someone sits alongside, if the face is not fully on camera, or if a phone is in use.
f. Entry is Rs. 275 per subject for students in India and USD 15 for students abroad. That includes two practice tests, which are not mandatory.
1. Listening becomes part of the test. Class 3 is the first CSBW class with Get, Set, Spell!, where children hear a word in an audio clip and write its spelling.
2. Describing words as well as naming words. Pleasant, sensitive and familiar describe things, while nightingale, bracelet and trough name them, and the list has plenty of both.
3. Flexible for families. Working parents get flexibility, according to a Class 3 review, because slots can be chosen to suit them.
4. A CSBW rank holder at this level. The CREST Hall of Fame shows a Spell Bee (Winter) International Rank 1 in Class 3 (2021-22) on one achiever's profile.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a webcam and a good internet facility. Use a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches: a Windows computer or tablet running Windows 8 or above, a Mac, or an iPad. Phones cannot be used. Use the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work); the exam cannot be taken on the Safari browser. The exam is monitored through a webcam.
Two things change in the Class 3 paper. First, a listening section is added: Get, Set, Spell!, in which students listen to audio and write the spellings of the words. The accent in the audio files is neutral, and the section is based on the Class 3 word list. Second, the paper grows from 40 to 50 questions, still in one hour.
Section 1 of the Spell Bee Winter syllabus for class 3 is Spell Bee Words for Class 3, a list of well over 350 words in alphabetical order. About 70% to 80% of questions are based on it, and up to 20% to 30% may use other words. Only a few, such as greet and supper, carry over from Class 2. A sample from the list:
ability, behaviour, bracelet, jigsaw, nightingale, pleasant, relish, sensitive, trough, vessel.
The list spells behaviour with a u, a reminder that CREST follows British English. For both spelling and meaning, CREST goes by the Oxford Learner's Dictionary first, and a word not found there is considered non-existent for the test.
Each of the 50 questions is worth one mark, so the paper totals 50, and wrong answers carry no penalty. Get, Set, Spell! takes 10 of them. The other 40 follow the Class 2 pattern: Word Champ 8, Spell Spies 8, Spellacadabra 6, Jumble Tumble 5, Pictospell 5, Sound Check 4 and Word Fusion 4.
The exam dates for CREST International Spell Bee Competition (Winter) (CSBW) for Class 3 for the Academic year 2026-27 are as given below:
| Exam dates | 7th January 2027 16th January 2027 |
| When to register | Spell Bee Winter for Class 3: enrolling before Practice 2 is preferred, because that exam is run in the real format. |
| Answer key dates | 19th - 20th January 2027 |
| Result date | Generally, the results are announced within a month of the last answer key date |
Note: Check Olympiad exam dates for other CREST Olympiads subjects as well.
The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.
Give yourselves about two months, with three or four 20-minute sessions a week. The new listening section is the place to begin, because no lower CSBW class has it.
For Get, Set, Spell!, read list words aloud at a steady pace and have your child write them without seeing them. Check together, then repeat the misses a day or two later. Keep a separate notebook for tricky words and their meanings.
For the written formats, mix it up: unscramble letters for Jumble Tumble, describe a picture in a word for Pictospell, and look up words on the CREST word pages, for example cashew or cocoon, to see meanings and usage.
In the last three weeks, the class 3 Spell Bee sample papers take over. Fifty questions in an hour leaves 72 seconds each, so time at least two complete sample papers, and for the listening part, practise on the same laptop or tablet your child will use, with the sound checked.
The free trial test is worth one run-through as well, because it copies the real exam screen. If you want more questions in the same style, the Class 3 Winter workbook is on the Olympiad books page linked in the banner below. Book the slot two or more days ahead, and remind your child that a guess is better than a blank.

Each challenge costs Rs. 125, and if the Academic Council agrees, the fee comes back along with 50 reward points.
Medals go to the top 15% of students, Merit Certificates to the top 25% and Honourable Mention certificates to the top 60%. See Awards & Recognition for the full criteria. When results are declared, look for the rank holders' names on the Awards and Cut-off pages.
Class 4 keeps this same 50-question paper, so the formats your child learns now carry straight over.
The students are recognized for their performance and it’s one of the great ways to encourage them to do such great things again and again. CREST Olympiads awards top performers of Classes 2 to 8 with trophies, medals and certificates based on their international, school and percentile ranks in the CREST Spelling Bee (Winter) competition exam. Senior KG and Class 1 students are not ranked; those scoring 60% or more receive a Star Medal and Merit Certificate, and every participant receives a digital participation certificate. Students can check the Olympiad awards & recognition in detail.
