Eligibility Criteria for Class 2 International Science Olympiad

a. The Science Olympiad for Class 2 is open to students anywhere in the world, from CBSE, ICSE, IB, State Boards or any other recognised board.

b. Schools can register their Class 2 students together, or you can register your child individually. CREST has run its Olympiads since 2019 and now reaches more than 6000 schools.

c. This is the first year your child takes the exam alone. Once the test begins, nobody should sit beside the child; that is one of the listed reasons for disqualification.

d. Your child's face must stay fully visible to the webcam. Pick a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen above 11.5 inches and a stable internet line: Windows 8 or later, a Mac or an iPad all work. Use the latest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox will also do, Safari will not), and leave phones out, since they cannot run the paper.

e. Level 2, the second and final level, is open to the top 55.56% of Class 2 candidates in Level 1, and to the top 3 school-registered students from each school with more than 25 students in the class.

Benefits of Science Olympiad for Class 2

1. Science starts at home. The Class 2 list covers food, housing and clothing, family and festivals, and occupations, so children see that their meals, clothes and festivals are part of Science too.

2. A first look at the Earth and beyond. Earth and Universe appears for the first time, and Air and Water now come with Rocks, so questions about the Sun or a pebble begin to have reasons behind them.

3. Concepts over cramming. According to a published Class 2 testimonial, CREST pushes children to build a firm conceptual base and to understand, in practical terms, the reason behind each concept.

4. The first ranked year. From Class 2, CREST gives percentiles, ranks by zone and internationally, and medals. Keep it light; a Class 2 review sees the Olympiad as something that builds enthusiasm for competitive exams.

Class 2 Science Olympiad Syllabus

Class 2 widens the lens from the child to the community. Compared with Class 1, the Science Olympiad syllabus for Class 2 adds Human Body; Food, Housing and Clothing; Family and Festivals; Occupations; Transport and Communication; and Earth and Universe, and it extends Air and Water to Air, Water and Rocks. Plants, Animals, and Good Habits and Safety Rules carry on. Living and Non-living Things, Human Beings and Their Needs, and Weather and the Sky are not on the Class 2 list.

Section 1

The Achievers Section asks Higher Order Thinking Questions, with the syllabus as per Section 1, so it adds depth rather than new topics.

Format: 35 questions, 60 minutes and 45 marks in total, made up of 25 one-mark questions and 10 two-mark Achievers questions. Level 2 uses the same structure. Guessing carries no penalty.

Many of these are everyday topics, so a good share of the preparation can happen at the dinner table and on the way to school. Occupations and Family and Festivals are the closest to home: they are about the people your child sees every day.

How to prepare for Class 2 Science Olympiad?

Start about six weeks before the exam with three or four sessions a week of around 25 minutes. Class 2 children work alone on exam day, so let your child read each question first and step in only when they are stuck.

Make each topic concrete. Draw the human body together and label the parts. Sort the family's clothes into summer, winter and rainy-day wear. List the people who come to your home in a week and what work they do. Talk about how your family celebrates a festival. Compare ways to travel and ways to send a message, from a letter to a video call. Collect a few pebbles and ask where rocks come from, then look at a picture of the Sun, the Moon and the planets.

CREST publishes a Class 2 workbook, listed with the Science Olympiad books for Class 2. Some children enjoy learning with a teacher and a small group; online Olympiad classes for Class 2 are run by Olympiad Success, whom CREST names as its official preparation partner.

Bring in the Science Olympiad questions for Class 2 from the sample papers page early on. Do a few questions after each topic rather than saving them all for the end. The Achievers questions carry 2 marks each, so give them a little extra time in practice.

On exam day, 35 questions share 60 minutes, roughly 103 seconds each. Do at least one full paper with a timer, and take the free trial, which is a replica of the main exam.

In the last week, go back to the questions your child got wrong and ask them to explain the right answer in their own words. Since this is the first year without a grown-up beside them, also let them do one practice paper completely on their own.
