  • We all have three important things we need in life: food, clothes, and a house. Our house is like a special place that keeps us safe and comfortable. It protects us from things like hot sun, cold wind, rain, and storms. Our house is where we keep our things safe.

    Characteristics of a Good House

Some important things that make a house good and comfortable for us to live in are:

    a) Proper ventilation: A good house should have windows and doors that can open and let fresh air come inside.

    b) Sunlight: It's great to have lots of sunlight coming into our house.

    c) Garbage disposal: A good house should have proper places to throw away garbage and waste so that it doesn't make our home messy.

    d) Sufficient water supply: We need water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. So, a good house should have enough clean water for all our needs.

    e) Clean bathrooms and drains: Having clean toilets and drains is important. It helps us stay healthy and keeps our home clean and fresh.

    Types of Houses

Houses can be divided into two types based on the materials used to make them. These are:

    a) Permanent house
    b) Temporary house

    Permanent Houses

    a) When people live in one place for a very long time, they make permanent houses. These houses are strong and stay in one place.
    b) These are made of materials like bricks, cement, and iron, which make them very durable.
    c) You can find these houses in towns and cities.
    d) Examples of permanent houses are flats, bungalows, and villas.

    Temporary Houses

    a) Some people like to move around and live in different places. For them, temporary houses are a good option.
    b) These houses can be moved from one place to another.
    c) They are designed to be portable and easy to move around.
    d) Examples of temporary houses are tents, caravans, and houseboats.

    Examples of Temporary houses

    1. Tent

    a) A tent is a special type of house made from strong cloth or nylon sheets. It's not permanent, which means we can easily set it up and fold it back when we're done using it.
    b) Tents are commonly used by soldiers, mountaineers, nomads, and campers during their journeys.
    c) They can be carried around easily because they are lightweight and foldable.

    2. Houseboat

    a) It is a house that can float on water like a boat.
    b) People live in these houses and enjoy the unique experience of living on the water.
    c) Houseboats are often found in places with calm and beautiful lakes or rivers.

    3. Caravan

    a) It's like a portable house that can be moved from one place to another.
    b) People who live a nomadic lifestyle, like gipsies, often live in caravans.
    c) They have everything they need inside, just like a regular house, but they can take it with them wherever they go.

    Special Houses

    Igloos

    a) Igloos are fascinating dome-shaped houses made from blocks of ice.
    b) You can find them in extremely cold areas, and they are often built by Eskimos, who are experts at using ice to create their homes.

    Stilt House

    a) Stilt houses are built in places where there is heavy rain and frequent flooding. These special houses are constructed on tall wooden poles or strong pillars called stilts.
    b) By building the house above the ground, it stays safe and dry even when there are floods around.

Materials Used to make Different Houses

Different houses are made using different materials. The materials we choose depend on what is available and suitable for building the houses.

    a) When people live in tents, they use thick cloth or nylon sheets to make them. These materials are light and easy to carry when they need to move from one place to another.
    b) Eskimos, who live in extremely cold places, make igloos using blocks of ice. Ice is the only material available in those areas, and it helps to keep them warm inside.
    c) People who live in permanent houses, like flats or bungalows, use materials such as bricks, cement, sand, iron, and stones. These materials are strong and durable, and they help to build sturdy houses that last a long time.

    House construction materials

So, depending on where people live and the kind of house they want, different materials are used to create the homes we live in.

    Roofs of Houses

    Sloping roofs

    a) In hilly areas where there is a lot of snowfall or heavy rainfall, houses often have sloping roofs.
    b) These roofs are slanted or tilted, like a triangle, to help the snow or water slide off easily.
    c) The slope of the roof prevents the snow or water from collecting on top of the house.

    Flat roofs

    a) In flat areas like plains, people usually build houses with flat roofs.
    b) These roofs are not slanted like sloping roofs. Instead, they are horizontal or level, just like the ground.
    c) Flat roofs are common in areas where there is less snow or rainfall, and they provide a simple and practical design for houses.
