Eligibility Criteria for Class 1 Cyber Olympiad Exams

a. CREST Cyber has no Nursery, Junior KG or Senior KG paper: it starts at Class 1 and runs up to Class 10. That makes the Cyber Olympiad for class 1 a child's first chance at this computer exam.

b. Children from CBSE, ICSE, IB, State Board or any other school can enter, in India or in any other country. A parent can register the child individually, or the school can enrol its Class 1 section.

c. Help from an adult is allowed at this age, as the exam is parent/teacher assisted. The adult sits with the child, helps the child understand each question, and the child then answers on their own ability. CREST allows this only up to Class 1.

d. Your child takes it at home, on a laptop, desktop or tablet (screen over 11.5 inches) with a webcam that stays on, on a stable internet connection. A Windows machine has to be on Windows 8 or newer; a Mac or an iPad is just as good. Use the latest Google Chrome, or Edge or Firefox, but not Safari, and note that phones are not supported for this exam.

e. Cyber does not have a Level 2. The Class 1 paper is the whole exam for the year, and awards are decided on it.

f. Before paying, you can try the free trial, which CREST describes as a replica of its main exams.

Benefits of Cyber Olympiad Exams for Class 1

1. Knowing the machine. The class 1 Cyber Olympiad starts with what a computer is and its basic parts, the monitor, keyboard, mouse and CPU, so the screen in front of your child stops being a mystery box.

2. Drawing with a mouse. Opening MS Paint, choosing a brush, pencil or colour, and making a circle, rectangle, square or triangle turns mouse control into drawing time.

3. Confidence with screens. In a published Class 1 review, CREST is thanked for lifting a young child's confidence and for getting the child comfortable with computer skills; the same review found the application process easy.

4. Early exposure without fuss. Another Class 1 testimonial likes that little children can try an Olympiad this early, online and from home, without much hassle. Every participant gets a digital participation certificate as well, whatever the score.

Class 1 Cyber Olympiad Exam Syllabus

Because CREST Cyber begins at Class 1, the Cyber Olympiad syllabus for Class 1 has no earlier class to build on. Its Section 1 is grouped into four units, exactly as CREST lists them:

Section 1: Computer & IT

  • Computers - A Smart Machine
    • What is a computer?
    • Basic Parts of Computer: Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, CPU
    • Peripheral devices: Printer, Speaker, Headphone, Webcam
    • Where computers are used: school, home, work, entertainment
  • Basic Computer Operations
    • How to start and shut down a computer
    • Desktop: Folders, Cursor, Icons
    • Minimize, Maximize, Close
  • Fun with Apps
    • Typing tools (MS Word)
    • Applications in mobile & computer: YouTube Kids, Games, WhatsApp
  • Introduction to MS Paint
    • Opening and closing MS Paint
    • Drawing and painting using tools like brush, pencil, colours
    • Shapes: Circle, Rectangle, Square, Triangle

Section 2, the Achievers Section, is made of Higher Order Thinking Questions and has no separate list: it reuses the four units above. CREST adds that the Class 1 questions are based on Windows 11, so practise on that if you can.

The Class 1 paper has 35 multiple-choice questions to answer in 60 minutes, for 45 marks. Section 1 supplies 25 of them at a mark apiece; the remaining 10, from the Achievers Section, count double. Wrong answers do not lose marks.

CREST calls its syllabus an outline at best, so some questions may check a more advanced understanding of these units.

How to Prepare for Class 1 Cyber Olympiad Exams?

Little and often suits this age. Two or three sessions of about 15 minutes a week at the family computer, over the month before the exam, are plenty, and they should feel like play.

Use the four units as a treasure hunt. Ask your child to point to the monitor, keyboard, mouse and CPU, then find the printer, speaker, headphones and webcam. Let them switch the computer on and shut it down the proper way. On the desktop, open a folder, spot the cursor and the icons, and try Minimize, Maximize and Close on a window. Type their name in MS Word, and chat about where computers are used: school, home, work and entertainment.

Save MS Paint for the end of a session as a reward. Open it, draw a circle, a square, a rectangle and a triangle, colour them in with the brush, and close it again.

After a few treasure hunts, open the class 1 Cyber Olympiad sample papers together. You may help your child understand a question, but let them choose the answer. The real paper gives 60 minutes for 35 questions, so each one has a little over a minute and a half (about 1 minute 43 seconds).

If you want more practice, Olympiad Success, which CREST names as its official preparation partner, sells online test series for Olympiad preparation.

In the final week, take the free trial test so the webcam screen is familiar, and book your exam slot from the dashboard at least 2 days ahead.
