Exam Highlights for Class 2 CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO)

a. Class 2 marks the first time your child takes the Mental Maths Olympiad unaided. Among the things CREST says can disqualify an attempt are someone sitting with the child and a face the camera cannot fully see, as well as any calculator or phone or other gadget being used.

b. Pupils of every board can register for the Mental Maths Olympiad for class 2 via their school or as individuals, in India or overseas.

c. Your child needs a desktop, a laptop or a tablet larger than 11.5 inches (Windows 8 or above, a Mac or an iPad), with a webcam and internet that will not drop out, and the latest Google Chrome, Edge or Firefox as the browser (Safari cannot be used); mobile phones are ruled out.

d. Places in Level 2 of this two-level Olympiad go to the highest-scoring 55.56% of Class 2 Level 1 candidates and, in any school that registers more than 25 children in the class, to its three top school-registered scorers.

e. Pick a slot at least 2 days before the exam in the Book Slot/Take Exam section of the dashboard. The "Click To Take Exam" button opens up only in the last 10 minutes before the slot starts.

The Mental Maths Olympiad syllabus for class 2 is the same five-topic list as Class 1:

CREST's Class 2 prep guide also covers the same ground as Class 1: numbers up to 100, addition with carry-over and subtraction with borrowing on numbers below 100, tables from 2 to 10, money, and 2-D and 3-D shapes. So what changes this year is not the content but the fact that children now answer on their own.

The format does not move either. An hour is allowed for 60 questions and 80 marks, made up of 40 Basique questions at one mark plus 20 Avance questions at two. Level 1 and Level 2 match exactly and nothing is subtracted for an incorrect choice.

Because the Class 2 topics repeat Class 1, begin with a quick check of what your child already knows. Ask ten oral questions from each topic and note which ones slow things down.

Then aim for speed. With roughly a minute per question, practise sums such as 32 minus 9 or 45 plus 27 in the head and say the answer aloud. Read the clock at home and ask how long it is until dinner.

The class 2 Mental Maths sample papers are worth doing against a timer. One question gives a weight 9 kg more than a sister's and asks for the sister's weight; another starts a dance practice at 5:30 pm and asks when it ends an hour and a half later. Both reward picturing the problem rather than writing it out.

CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO) answer key dates for class 2 can be checked on the website. Answer keys are released on the answer key dates shown on the exam schedule. Students who all appeared for the exam can only check the answer key.

Allow up to 10 days from the last Level 1 answer key date for the Class 2 Mental Maths Olympiad Level 1 results, and up to a month from the last Level 2 answer key date for the Level 2 results; both can then be seen on the dashboard with your registered login.

This year brings the first ranks and all awards rest on the Level 2 paper. Coming first, second or third among all Class 2 candidates in the world wins an Achiever's Trophy and a Merit Certificate. Gold is for a Level 2 percentile from 96 upwards and equally for a top-ten place in the zone; the 93-96 band means silver and the 90-93 band bronze.

Plenty of children are recognised below the medal line too: the top 25% with a Merit Certificate, the 25-50% group with a digital Honourable Mention certificate, and every participant, medal or not, with a digital participation certificate.
