3. Strong past results. The Hall of Fame lists a student who took International Rank 1 in both Spell Bee (Summer) and Spell Bee (Winter) in Class 8, in 2020-21.

4. Good reasons to take part. One published Class 8 testimonial captures the excitement of learning that CREST was organising a Spell Bee test, and one more from Class 8 likes that students choose the time of their own tests.

Spell Bee Competition Syllabus for Class 8

Class 8 uses the same syllabus text as Class 7. There is no CREST word list; instead the Spell Bee syllabus for class 8 names a book, and its two sections read:

Section 1: Spell Bee Competition Words for Class 8

  • Both levels draw every word from High School English Grammar and Composition by Wren and Martin.

Section 2

  • Rapid Fire: hear the audio and write the spelling. These words also come from the Wren and Martin book.

Two reference rules apply throughout. Spellings must be British English, and any doubt over spelling or meaning is settled by the Oxford Learner's Dictionary; if a word is not in that dictionary, the test treats it as non-existent.

Paper, Level 1 and Level 2 alike: 60 minutes, 80 questions, 80 marks, one mark each, nothing deducted. Grouped by skill, listening takes 20 questions (Rapid Fire), spelling from phonetics 4 (Word Melody), word building and error spotting take 20 (Word Makeup 10, Word Cookie 10), meaning and usage take 16 (Word Connection 8, Word Ensemble 8), and the rest are Mathlish 8, Spell-o-Spell 6, Mingle-Mangle 3 and PictureSpeak 3. Each section is described in the Spell Bee marking scheme for class 8.

Nothing changes from Class 7, so notes made last year from the same book still help.
