a. The International Green Warrior Olympiad (IGWO) for class 1 accepts every Class 1 child, whichever school board the child follows and whichever country the family lives in. Schools can put forward a whole class together, and parents may also sign up a single child.
b. Little ones get a helper. In Class 1, the only assisted class in IGWO, a parent or teacher can sit alongside to make each question clear, after which the child picks an option unaided.
c. Exam day happens at home, in front of a webcam that monitors the session. Set up a computer (laptop or desktop) or a tablet whose display exceeds 11.5 inches; it can be a Mac, an iPad or a Windows device running Windows 8 or newer, but phones are ruled out.
d. Run a quick check of the internet line beforehand (CREST asks for a stable connection) and use the latest Google Chrome, which CREST prefers; Edge or Firefox also work, but Safari is not supported.
e. All questions are in English. IGWO is a one-round event, which makes this Class 1 sitting the entire contest for the year, with no Level 2.
f. Entry costs Rs. 275 within India or USD 15 for children living outside India. Two online practice tests are thrown in with the fee; your child may sit them or skip them.
1. Small green habits, early. The International Green Warrior Olympiad draws on 8 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. For a Class 1 child that means turning off an unused light, eating up what is on the plate, carrying a cloth bag to the shop and keeping the local park free of litter.
2. Medals, but no rank list. Ranks are not given in Class 1. CREST explains that it does not want to burden little children, and treats these exams as a first taste of the competitive tests to come. Even so, effort is rewarded: Class 1 children on 60% or more receive a Star Medal with a Merit Certificate alongside it.
3. Easy to begin from home. In one Class 1 review, taking the paper online at home is what makes an early start possible for young children, with little hassle.
4. At ease with computers. A different Class 1 review is grateful that CREST helped a young child grow in confidence and get used to working on a computer, and also liked the simple application. The testimonials page carries many more such comments.

The International Green Warrior Olympiad for class 1 is where IGWO begins, so this is the first list a child meets. The Green Warrior Olympiad syllabus for class 1 sorts its topics into eight themes:
Climate Action has the most topics, eight of them. Children start with a basic understanding of seasons and with air pollution, then learn how melting ice, rising sea levels and extreme weather show climate change at work, why trees are important, and how planting a tree or caring for a small garden helps.
Clean Water and Sanitation follows with six. Its topics begin with "What is water?" and where water comes from (rivers, lakes, taps), and go on to trash and dirt as pollutants, keeping water clean, waterborne diseases, and clean water at home with the help of water filters.
The remaining six themes stay close to everyday life. Garbage collectors and gardeners appear as community helpers, electric vehicles and public transportation as greener ways to travel, and sharing toys as a form of reuse. The "3 Rs", underwater creatures, protecting trees and plants, the food groups of fruits, vegetables and grains, and telling healthy foods from unhealthy ones are also on the list.
Nothing comes before Class 1 in IGWO, so there is no earlier list to set this against. Class 2 repeats these topics unchanged, and Class 3 brings a fresh set. CREST adds a caution: read the list as an outline, because a handful of questions may probe further.
On screen, the child sees 35 multiple-choice questions and has 60 minutes, for 45 marks in total. Twenty-five Green Champ questions are worth 1 mark apiece and ten Green Challenger questions 2 marks apiece. Nobody loses marks for picking a wrong option.

Think of preparing for the class 1 International Green Warrior Olympiad as a game the whole house plays. A few minutes snatched from the day, at bath time or over a meal, will cover more of the syllabus than a long session at a table.
Use the house as the classroom. Make your child the "light monitor" who switches off fans and lights in empty rooms. Turn the tap off together while brushing teeth and talk about where tap water comes from. Sort a box of old toys into keep, share and reuse. On a trip to the market, ask which items are fruits, vegetables or grains, and which snacks are healthy.
Take the outdoor themes outside. Point out the season, look for smoke from vehicles, sow a seed in a cup and water it each day. A picture book about sea creatures is a good way into Life Below Water, followed by a chat about why litter on a beach harms them.
Once the topics start to feel like old friends, bring out the ten sample questions (answers included) and the printable PDF sample paper from the class 1 Green Warrior Olympiad sample papers page. Read every question out loud, which a helper may do in the real exam too, but let your child do the choosing.
Speed hardly matters in Class 1. Sixty minutes for 35 questions comes to about 1 minute 43 seconds of thinking time per question. A run through the free trial, which copies the main exam platform, means the screen, camera and buttons will not surprise anyone on the day. Not registered yet?
