The CREST International Spell Bee (Winter) is India's first online spelling test conducted for class 1. The Spell Bee competition is held every year to evaluate spelling skills. Students learn the spellings of words as well as their forms, correct pronunciation, meanings, inflections & derivations and word usage through the CREST International Spell Bee exam, which builds an understanding and knowledge of the words learned. CREST Olympiads holds only online Spell Bee International exams for students in class 1.

a. Class 1 children from every board, whether CBSE, ICSE, a State Board or another, can take part in the Spelling Bee competition for class 1, in India and in other countries.

b. Class 1 is still a parent/teacher-assisted class. An adult may help your child make sense of a question, but the choice of answer belongs to your child.

c. Spell Bee Winter is a single-paper competition: your child sits Level 1 only, and that paper decides the result.

d. Registration works through schools or directly. Ask whether your child's school is entering students; if it is not, register your child on the CREST website yourself.

e. Your child sits the exam at home, and a webcam monitors the whole session. The device must be a laptop, desktop or tablet (screen over 11.5 inches, webcam attached), never a mobile. A stable internet connection and an updated Google Chrome (failing that, Edge or Firefox, but never Safari) are needed. Windows devices should be on Windows 8 or above, and a Mac or an iPad also works.

f. The free trial costs nothing, so you can try it before paying any fee. It is a replica of the main exam, so you and your child see exactly how the screen works.

1. Everyday words for little ones. The Class 1 list is full of things a young child can picture, from caterpillar, igloo and monsoon to puddle, raindrop, sneeze and toothbrush.

2. A first try at building words. Word Fusion, which asks children to make new words and compound words with a suffix or prefix, joins the paper in Class 1. Senior KG did not have it.

3. Growing confidence at the computer. A Class 1 testimonial thanks CREST for a boost in the child's confidence, for new computer skills and for an easy application process.

4. A medal for a good score. Class 1 is not ranked, but 60% or more earns a Star Medal along with a Merit Certificate.

1. Spelling Bee Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a webcam and a good internet facility. Use a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches: a Windows computer or tablet running Windows 8 or above, a Mac, or an iPad. Phones cannot be used. Use the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work); the exam cannot be taken on the Safari browser. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

In Class 1 the word list is almost completely new. Of the Senior KG words, only bye appears again. The paper also gets bigger, from 25 questions in 45 minutes to 40 questions in an hour, and Word Fusion is added. Every Senior KG question format stays.

Section 1 of the Spell Bee Winter syllabus for class 1 is called Spell Bee Words for Class 1. CREST says about 70%-80% of questions come from it, while up to 20%-30% may use words from outside the list. The full list, alphabetically arranged, reads:

Spellings follow British English conventions. The Oxford Learner's Dictionary is the primary reference for spellings and meanings, and a word missing from it is considered non-existent for the test.

There are 40 one-mark questions, so the class 1 Spell Bee is marked out of 40, and no marks are deducted for a wrong answer. They are spread across seven formats: Word Champ 8, Spell Spies 8, Spellacadabra 6, Jumble Tumble 5, Pictospell 5, Sound Check 4 and Word Fusion 4.

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Plan on short, cheerful sessions of ten to fifteen minutes. You will sit beside your child in the exam, so practise the same way: you read, your child thinks and answers.

The Class 1 list runs to over 300 words, so take one letter a day and come back to the long letters, such as b, c, s and t, over two or three days. Say a word, act it out or draw it, and ask your child to write it. Picture words like caterpillar or toothbrush are easy to sketch, and the CREST word pages for caterpillar and control give the meaning and example sentences to read aloud.

Word Fusion is new this year, so give it a little extra time. Raindrop, sunlight and toothbrush are all on the list; split each one into its two parts, then see what other words your child can build from the parts. For Spell Spies, which tests spelling, leave a letter out of a list word for your child to fill in.

After a few weeks, bring in the class 1 Spell Bee sample papers. Try one sample paper over two sittings, then a full hour side by side. Forty questions in 60 minutes gives a minute and a half for each, so help your child keep moving rather than stopping long on one.

Class 1 is the first class with a CREST Spell Bee (Winter) workbook, listed on the Olympiad books page, if you want more questions in the same style. Schedule the exam slot on the dashboard two or more days ahead.

CREST Olympiads will publish the CREST Spell Bee Winter cut-off marks for the class 1 students. The CREST International Spell Bee cut-off and results will be available online at the CREST Olympiads website. There will be a separate Spell Bee cut-off for each class.

The Spell Bee answer key contains correct answers to all of the exam questions. Students can estimate their scores in the CREST International Spell Bee Winter (CSBW) Olympiad exam. Students can access the CREST Spell Bee answer keys by logging in with the credentials & going to the dashboard section.

Results for class 1 Spell Bee children are put up within a month of the last answer key date. They appear under Performance once you sign in with the login created at registration.

Before any result, CREST shows the answer keys, and only on set dates; keys missed on those dates cannot be opened later. Spot a mistake? Each question can be challenged from the answer key page at Rs. 125, and an upheld challenge earns the fee back plus 50 reward points.

Class 1 results show no rank. CREST does not want to put any burden on little kids, its cut-off page says, so the youngest classes are assisted, unranked and meant mainly as exposure to competitive exams.

A Class 1 child who scores 60% or more is awarded a Star Medal with a Merit Certificate. Every participant receives a digital certificate of participation as well.

Spell Bee Winter has one level, so this result ends the year. From Class 2 ranks are given, and children sit the paper on their own.
