Proverbs, Prepositional Phrases, Participle Phrases, Determiners and Question Tags are not in the Class 9 list. Reading texts now include flyers and classifieds, and the expressions cover giving advice, discussing probability and making an offer.

How to prepare for Class 9 English Olympiad?

Class 9 is busy, so plan around school tests. Eight weeks with four focused sessions a week works well, plus one longer weekend session for a full paper. In the final week, stop starting new topics and revise only your own error notes.

Spend the first fortnight on the new grammar. Write pairs of sentences for each conditional ("If it rains, we will stay in" against "If it rained, we would stay in"). Correct subject-verb agreement errors in a page of text. Turn statements into questions. Revise modals and reported speech together, since both change with tense. For reading, use classified ads and flyers from a newspaper, and summarise one editorial a week in three lines.

After the grammar fortnight, turn to the class 9 English Olympiad sample papers, then last year's paper. When you check answers, sort the mistakes into grammar, vocabulary and reading so you know where the marks went.

Timing: 72 seconds a question, for 50 questions in 60 minutes. Keep some time in hand for the 10 Achievers questions, worth 2 marks each. Sit the free practice test early so any technical problem shows up in good time.

One CREST participant topped the English Olympiad internationally in Class 9 and again in Class 10, according to the Hall of Fame profile. For practice, use the CREST English workbook; more practice sits with Olympiad Success, an online Olympiad trainer and the official CREST preparation partner.
