Every great mathematician starts from somewhere, so why not from the beginning step of the academic journey? Mental Maths is all about doing simple math like adding, subtracting, and counting numbers in your mind - without using fingers, paper, or a calculator! For tiny learners in Senior Kindergarten (Senior KG), learning Mental Maths can be both fun and exciting. It helps young children think faster, solve problems easily, and get better at numbers from the very beginning.
To help Senior KG kids enjoy and improve their maths skills, CREST Olympiads (World's Most Innovative Olympiad Exams) introduced a special competition just for them - the CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO). This Olympiad is conducted online and invites young students from more than 60 countries and 6000+ schools to participate!
This exam is a fun way to test children's ability to think logically, solve basic math problems, and improve their early math skills. It also builds confidence and encourages a love for learning right from the start.

a. Any recognised board will do for the Mental Maths Olympiad for Senior KG, from CBSE, ICSE and IB to the State Boards, and entries from abroad count just the same. CREST's Mental Maths ladder has its first rung here, in Senior KG, and climbs to Class 12.
b. A school already working with CREST can put its pupils in itself. If the school is not on board, a parent can complete the registration online.
c. A grown-up keeps your child company from start to finish. CREST describes the Senior KG and Class 1 papers as parent/teacher assisted: you may explain what a question is asking, while the choice of answer stays with your child.
d. There is no exam centre to travel to. The paper opens at home on a desktop, a laptop or a tablet larger than 11.5 inches, which can be a Mac, an iPad or a Windows device on Windows 8 or above, with a webcam (phones are not accepted), over a stable internet connection and in the newest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work; Safari does not).
e. Senior KG gets two rounds: reach 60% or more in Level 1 and your child is invited to sit Level 2.
f. Curious first? Try the free trial, a full copy of the main exam, so that on the day the screen holds no surprises for your child.
1. Little sums, done in the head. The Senior KG paper asks children to add two single-digit numbers whose total is no more than 10, to find the gap in 5 + __ = 7, and to skip count in twos and fives. Working these out in the mind, with no paper, is what Mental Maths means.
2. Days, months and what comes next. In Time Travelers, one of the eight sections, children put the days of the week in order and name the day or month just before or after another, ideas that come up at home all the time.
3. Praise without pressure. Nobody is ranked until Class 2. What a Senior KG child can win is a Star Medal with a Merit Certificate, given for 60% or more in Level 2.
4. A real exam, gently. A published Senior KG review is thankful that the Senior KG section gets to take part and calls the topics useful for everyday class work.

The Mental Maths Olympiad syllabus for Senior KG is split into eight playful sections, every one of them built from a few named skills:
Counting and adding stay inside 10, while skip counting by 2s and 5s reaches 20. Subtraction answers are never below zero, and Number Signs brings in >, < and =. CREST Mental Maths begins at Senior KG, which leaves no earlier class to set it against.
Exam day means 25 multiple-choice questions over 45 minutes for a total of 30 marks, made of 20 Basique questions at 1 mark apiece and 5 Avance questions at 2 marks apiece. Level 2 copies this layout exactly, and a wrong guess does not reduce the score.
CREST's Mental Maths Olympiad syllabus page starts with Senior KG and goes on to every class up to 12, and the Senior KG Mental Maths sample papers show each skill as a real question.

Mental Maths in Senior KG works well as play. Ten minutes at a time is enough; end the game while your child still wants more.
Turn each section into something you do at home. Count the spoons on the table, hide two, and ask how many remain. Make pairs of buttons that add up to 5 or to 10. Chant the days of the week at breakfast and ask which day came before today. Hold up a ball, a tin and a box and ask what shape each one is like.
The Senior KG Mental Maths sample papers give the real flavour. In one question a duck has 6 friends and your child works out how many more ducks would make 10; in another, the right sign has to go between two numbers. Say the words out loud, then wait for an answer before you step in.
With 45 minutes for 25 questions there is a little under two minutes per question, plenty for a child who is not tired. Sit the free trial side by side a week or two ahead so that the screen and the webcam feel ordinary.
