Eligibility Criteria for Class 2 Spell Bee Competition

a. In Class 2 the adult steps away. Having someone beside the child during the paper, or a face that slips out of the webcam's view, can get the attempt disqualified.

b. Your child can be entered by the school or by you directly, whatever the board and wherever you live.

c. Device check: tablet, laptop or desktop (mobiles excluded), display over 11.5 inches, webcam built in or attached, and a stable internet connection. Windows machines need Windows 8 or newer; a Mac or an iPad also works. Use the latest Google Chrome, or Edge or Firefox; Safari is not supported.

d. Two levels are held for the Spell Bee competition for class 2. Level 2 seats go to Class 2 children who land in the top 66.67% of Level 1, and also to a school's top three school-registered students when that school enters more than 25 from the class.

e. Families in India pay Rs. 275 and families abroad USD 15; two online practice tests, neither of them compulsory, are part of what that money buys.

f. Use the free trial test to see the platform before you pay.

Benefits of Class 2 Spell Bee Competition

1. Fresh themes. Insects, Everyday Items and Our Environment join the list in Class 2, with words such as grasshopper, bucket and shadow. These are things a child can spot in the garden or around the house, so practice can happen anywhere.

2. Words that place things. The Preposition/Adverbs heading brings behind, inside, through and upstairs, the small words children reach for when they describe where something is. Word Chain, a section found only in the Class 1 and 2 papers, asks them to link words in a sequence.

3. A first look at ranks. Class 2 brings ranks and percentile-based medal bands into the results, a child's first glimpse of how competitive marking works.

4. Keen to compete. Enthusiasm for competitive exams is what one Class 2 review credits CREST with building, calling it a very good initiative. A second Class 2 testimonial, after two years with CREST, sums the experience up as quite a learning one.

Each level is a 60-minute paper of 40 one-mark questions, 40 marks in all, and a wrong answer just earns no mark. The sections are the same as in Class 1: Spell-o-Spell 8, Word Connection 8, Mingle-Mangle 4, PictureSpeak 4, Word Cookie 12 and Word Chain 4, as the Spell Bee marking scheme for class 2 shows.

Use British spellings: the Oxford Learner's Dictionary is CREST's yardstick for every word and its meaning.

How to prepare for Class 2 Spell Bee Competition?

Spread the work over five or six weeks. A Class 2 child can handle a fair share alone, with you checking in.

First fortnight: the new headings. Spell insects on a garden walk (ant, beetle, spider, worm), and collect Everyday Items around the house: basket, brush, bucket, eraser.

Week 3: revise the Class 1 list, since it is part of this year's syllabus. A dictation of ten Class 1 words a day is enough.

Week 4: Word Cookie carries 12 questions, the most of any section, so practise spotting one wrong letter. Write grasshopper with a single s and ask what is missing. CREST's word page for caterpillar shows the meaning, part of speech and usage examples, a handy model for looking words up.

Final fortnight: full class 2 Spell Bee sample papers with a timer. Forty questions in 60 minutes gives 1 minute 30 seconds a question. Close the plan with the free trial, and pick up the Class 2 Spell Bee (Summer) workbook from the Olympiad books page if you want more practice.

When the day comes, tell your child to answer everything; a wrong choice never reduces the score in this Spell Bee.
