Benefits of Reasoning Olympiad for Class 5

1. Speed as a skill. The Class 5 paper has 50 questions in 60 minutes, so children learn to pace themselves at about 72 seconds a question.

2. Familiar topics, deeper questions. The Class 5 list is identical to Class 4, which lets children build on last year's work instead of starting new topics.

3. Questions with a twist. One Class 5 testimonial says CREST sets questions from the child's own class but turns each one slightly, and suggests that every student try the exam.

4. A sensible clock. Another Class 5 review praises the good questions and the nice time limit.

Class 5 Reasoning Olympiad Exam Syllabus

The topic list does not change from Class 4. The Reasoning Olympiad syllabus for class 5 has the same eleven Section 1 topics, in the same order. What changes is the paper.

Class 5 topic list (Section 1)

  • Patterns
  • Analogy and Classification
  • Geometrical Shapes and Solids
  • Embedded Figures
  • Mirror Images and Water Images
  • Direction Sense Test
  • Possible Combinations
  • Ranking Test
  • Alphabet Test and Logical Sequence of Words
  • Puzzle Test
  • Coding - Decoding

As before, the Achievers Section has no separate list: its Higher Order Thinking Questions use the eleven topics above.

The class 5 Reasoning Olympiad paper grows to 50 questions and 60 marks, still in 60 minutes. Logical Reasoning now has 40 one-mark questions, and the Achievers Section stays at 10 questions worth 2 marks each. That leaves about 72 seconds per question, against roughly 103 seconds in Class 4. CRO has no negative marking and no second level.

With the same topics and less time per question, accuracy at speed is the thing to practise this year.

If your child sat CRO in Class 4, last year's notes still match this list, and what needs fresh work is pacing.

How to Prepare for Class 5 Reasoning Olympiad Exams?

In Class 5 the topics are familiar, so most of the preparation is about speed. Give it five or six weeks.

In the first two weeks, take one of the class 5 Reasoning Olympiad sample papers without a timer, mark the topics that felt slow, and use that first sample paper score as your starting point. From week 3 to week 5, practise timed sets of 10 questions in 12 minutes, which is the real exam pace of 72 seconds a question.

Some topics need a quick sketch rather than mental work. For Possible Combinations and Puzzle Test, practise drawing a small table; for Direction Sense Test, draw arrows as you read. For Mirror Images and Water Images, check one side of the figure at a time. Patterns and Coding - Decoding reward saying the rule out loud before choosing an option.

Use the CREST Reasoning workbook for Class 5 from the Olympiad books page for topic-wise practice, and have your child redo every wrong question a few days later and note the rule that was missed.

In the last week, take the free trial if you have not already, sit one full 50-question paper at the time of the booked slot, and keep the evening before the exam light.

A one-page rule sheet helps in Class 5. Each time your child cracks a new kind of question, add the trick in a single line, for example 'count the faces you cannot see' for a solid, or 'water images flip top to bottom'. Read the sheet together the night before.
