Eligibility Criteria for Class Junior KG International English Olympiad

a. The Junior KG English Olympiad is meant for four- and five-year-olds. Any board is fine, whether CBSE, ICSE, IB or a State Board, and children outside India can register too.

b. If the school is taking part, it can register the class. If not, register your child individually on the CREST website.

c. In Junior KG a parent or teacher assists during the exam. You may read the questions out and help your child understand what is being asked; the answer itself should be your child's.

d. Set up the device at home before the day. A laptop, desktop or tablet works if its screen is larger than 11.5 inches, its webcam is switched on and the connection manages 2 Mbps; a phone will not do. Keep your child's face in full view of the camera while the test runs.

e. The Junior KG paper comes in two rounds, Level 1 and Level 2, and a child needs more than 60% in the first round to reach the second.

f. A practice round helps here: the free trial test works just like the real one, so your child can get used to the screen before you pay.

Benefits of English Olympiad for Class Junior KG

1. Reading gets a head start. Junior KG questions cover short vowel sounds, two-letter words and the magic 'e', the pieces a child needs before reading simple words alone.

2. Little words, used correctly. This and that, he and she, a and an: the paper checks the small words children mix up all the time, and practising them at home makes everyday speech a little more accurate.

3. Learning that matches school. A published KG review is grateful that CREST opens the Olympiad to the KG/prep section, and says the topics help with regular class work.

4. A reward for trying. Junior KG children who reach 60% in Level 2, or go beyond it, are sent a Star Medal and a Merit Certificate. Every child receives a Digital Participation Certificate, so no one is left out.

How to prepare for Class Junior KG English Olympiad?

Short and cheerful suits a four-year-old: two or three games a day, ten to fifteen minutes in all. Pick a time when your child is fresh.

Make vowel sounds silly. Say "a" as in apple and "o" as in orange, then hunt for objects that start the same way. Show how adding an e turns "cap" into "cape". Build two-letter words like "on", "in" and "up" with fridge magnets. Hide a toy under, behind or in front of a chair and ask where it is. For opposites, let your child feel a full and an empty bottle, or a smooth and a rough stone. Keep a few sight words on cards and flash some each day.

After a couple of weeks of games, open the Junior KG English Olympiad sample papers. Read the questions slowly and point to the options. The Achievers questions use the same topics but need a little more thought, so talk them through together.

Timing is gentle: 25 questions in 45 minutes leaves close to two minutes per question. Do one full paper together at the computer, and use the free practice test so the camera and screen are nothing new on exam day. For paper practice, look for the CREST workbooks for young children on the Olympiad books page.
