a. All Class 1 children can register for the English Olympiad for Class 1, either through their school or individually. Boards make no difference: CBSE, ICSE, IB and State Boards are all welcome, as are children studying outside India.
b. After this year the help stops: Class 1 is the final class in which a parent or teacher may assist with the paper. Explaining a question is allowed, while choosing the answer is your child's job. In Class 2 and above, children sit the paper on their own.
c. It is an online exam taken at home and monitored by webcam from start to finish. Any laptop, desktop or tablet will do as long as the screen is bigger than 11.5 inches, but a mobile phone will not. A 2 Mbps connection and an up-to-date browser, preferably Google Chrome, keep things smooth.
d. The English Olympiad for Class 1 is conducted in 2 levels. More than 60% in Level 1 takes a Class 1 child through to Level 2.
e. Your child joins participants from 60+ countries. CREST has run these Olympiads since 2019, with 6000+ schools taking part.
1. Grammar gets a name. Class 1 is when nouns, verbs and conjunctions turn up on the Olympiad list, and pronouns return as a topic of their own. Children start to see that "run" is a doing word and that "she" can stand in for a name.
2. Reading for meaning. Comprehension questions on short prose and poems ask a six-year-old to read and then think, a step beyond reading aloud.
3. Ease with the computer. A Class 1 review thanks CREST for building a child's confidence and getting her used to the computer, and mentions how easy the application process was.
4. No travel, no fuss. Another published Class 1 review is glad the Olympiad can be done online from home, so young children join in with little hassle.

The class 1 English Olympiad syllabus is where grammar starts in earnest. Compared with Senior KG, Nouns, Verbs, Conjunctions, Basic Tenses, Punctuation and Comprehension (Prose and Poetry) appear for the first time, along with word games such as Jumbled Letters, Word Pairs and Odd One Out, and Pronouns come back as a topic (Junior KG covered This and That, He and She). Strokes, Rhyming Words and People and their Professions are no longer listed.
Section 1 covers: Jumbled Letters, Words: Their Meanings and Opposites, Identify the Word From the Picture, Making a Word, Feminine and Masculine, One and Many, Word Pairs, Odd One Out, Animals: Their Babies and Sounds, Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Conjunctions, Articles, Prepositions, Adjectives, Basic Tenses, Punctuation and Comprehension (Prose and Poetry).
For the ten Achievers Section questions, Class 1 children meet these topics again as Higher Order Thinking Questions.
The Class 1 paper is longer than in KG, with 35 questions to answer in 60 minutes and 45 marks in all. Twenty-five English Language questions are worth a mark apiece, and each of the 10 Achievers questions is worth two. Level 2 keeps the same layout, and wrong answers cost nothing. When a spelling looks doubtful, the Oxford Learner's Dictionary is the reference CREST goes by.

Plan on 20 minutes a day, four days a week, for about six weeks. Your child is still assisted in the exam, so prepare the way you will sit on the day: side by side.
Turn the topics into games. Jumble the letters of "frog" or "milk" and race to fix them. Play odd one out with three fruits and a spoon. Match animals with their babies and sounds: the cow and its calf, the dog and its puppy, the hen that clucks. Spot nouns and verbs in a picture book ("the boy kicks the ball"). Swap names for he, she and they. Read a four-line poem and ask two questions about it.
When the games are going well, bring out the class 1 English Olympiad sample papers, and later last year's paper. Mark the questions your child found hard and come back to that topic two days later.
On exam day there are 35 questions in an hour, a little over a minute and a half each. Do one full paper at the computer in a single sitting, with the webcam on, and take the free practice test once. The Class 1 CREST English workbook in the table below has topic-wise practice, and Olympiad Success, CREST's official preparation partner, offers class 1 English Olympiad worksheets and mock tests online.

Answer keys are always released by CREST Olympiads within one week of the actual examination. The dates for the answer keys can be found on the exam schedule page of the website. Students can check the answer keys by going to the dashboard.
Expect the Class 1 English Olympiad scores to go live roughly four weeks after the last answer key date, and use your registration details on the CREST Olympiads website to open them.
Since a parent or teacher assists in the exam, CREST gives no ranks in Class 1. In Level 1, the line to watch is 60%: more than that and your child qualifies for Level 2. Children who reach the 60% mark in Level 2 are awarded the Star Medal and a Merit Certificate, while every other participant can download a Digital Participation Certificate.
Next year is different. From Class 2, children sit the exam on their own and are ranked by zone and internationally, so a good Class 1 result is a useful warm-up for that change.
a. Students scoring above 60% in Level 2 will be awarded a Star Medal along with a Merit Certificate.
b. Other participants will receive a Digital Participation Certificate, accessible through their dashboard.
c. No ranking system is followed for students of Classes KG and 1.
