International Green Warrior Olympiad

International Green Warrior Olympiad

International Green Warrior Olympiad (IGWO), an initiative of CREST Olympiads, is conducted in association with the Office of PSA (Principal Scientific Advisor) to the Government of India, Unity of Nations Action for Climate Change Council, General Global (Education Program of Tony Blair's Institute of Global Change and Water Bank Foundation. This event aims to have like-minded organizations and schools become part of broader global efforts to address climate challenges and to create awareness about United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through various community activities and conducting exams.

GWO will focus on 8 out of 17 goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This exam will help in raising awareness, educating individuals, and mobilizing action which are indeed essential components of driving positive change. By conducting exams and competitions related to these 8 SDG goals, GWO will draw attention to these topics and encourage participants to become more conscious of their ecological footprint. Also, this program has the ability to create a significant impact in the battle against climate change and in the quest for a more sustainable future.

As the future of our planet lies in the hands of young leaders, we can be certain that they will be fully ready to tackle the urgent environmental challenges. Engaging the students in sustainability efforts is particularly important, as they will inherit the consequences of current environmental decisions.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations provide an admirable approach to tackle worldwide issues, including climate change and environmental degradation. By highlighting the interdependence of these issues, Green Warrior Olympiad (GWO) helps participants grasp how solving one problem can positively affect other areas.

8 SDG Goals are part of GWO: Below are a few facts which compelled Association of Indian Principals and CREST Olympiads to introduce GWO and the Green Warrior Community to help the world move a step closer to sustainability. We strive to captivate and inform our audience by presenting a diverse selection of reading materials including articles, press releases, blogs and compelling stories. Stay tuned for an exceptional learning experience!

Zero Hunger:Waste less food and support local farmers” By 2022, approximately 735 million people – or 9.2% of the world's population – found themselves in a state of chronic hunger – a staggering rise compared to 2019. If we don’t act now 600 million people will face hunger by 2030. Our main goal is to eradicate hunger, ensure food security, and enhance nutrition, while simultaneously emphasizing the significance of sustainable agriculture by imparting knowledge to our future leaders.

Clean Water and Sanitation:Avoid wasting water” In 2022, 2.2 billion people still lacked safely managed drinking water, including 703 million without a basic water service; 3.5 billion people lacked safely managed sanitation, including 1.5 billion without basic sanitation services; and 2 billion lacked a basic hand washing facility, including 653 million with no hand washing facility at all. We must prioritize the accessibility and long-term conservation of water and sanitation for everyone.

Affordable and Clean Energy: From 2015 to 2021, the proportion of the global population with access to electricity has increased from 87 per cent to 91 per cent. We must guarantee that everyone has access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy.

Sustainable Cities and Communities: Cities represent the future of global living. The world’s population reached 8 billion on 2022, over half living in urban areas. This figure is only expected to rise, with 70 percent of people expected to live in cities by 2050. Approximately 1.1 billion people currently live in slums or slum-like conditions in cities, with 2 billion more expected in the next 30 years. Promote the development of cities and human settlements that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Responsible Consumption and Production: Our planet is running out of resources, but populations are continuing to grow. If the global population reaches 9.8 billion by 2050, the equivalent of almost three planets will be required to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles. “Consume responsibly for our planet, Our common future depends on it” Recycle paper, plastic, glass and aluminium. We should actively promote and wholeheartedly embrace sustainable practices in both consumption and production.

Climate Action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. To preserve a livable climate, Greenhouse gas emissions need to be cut 43% by 2030. The time to act and stop global warming is now.

Life Below Water ( “Avoid plastic bags”): Every year, an estimated 5 to 12 million metric tonnes of plastic enters the ocean, costing roughly $13 billion per year – including clean-up costs and financial losses in fisheries and other industries. About 89% of plastic litter found on the ocean floor are single-use items like plastic bags. Now is the moment to give priority to conserving and sustainably utilizing our oceans, seas, and marine resources in order to guarantee long-term and sustainable development.

Life on Land (“Plant a tree and help protect the environment”): Between 2015 and 2019, at least 100 million hectares of healthy and productive land were degraded every year, impacting the lives of 1.3 billion people. Join us in making a commitment to safeguard, revitalize, and advance the responsible utilization of land-based ecosystems, effectively administer forests, eradicate desertification, reverse the decline of land quality, and put an end to the depletion of biodiversity.

The above UN SDG goals will form the basis of Green Warrior Olympiad (GWO) as well as other community activities. We invite schools, parents, students, social organizations and corporations to join hands in creating awareness and in generating impact that we can jointly make for future generations.
