The Green Action School Rankings celebrate schools that are moving beyond awareness to measurable, on-ground sustainability action. Curated by ARC, the rankings assess how schools integrate sustainability into learning, operations, and student-led initiatives — creating future-ready, responsible global citizens.

The Green Action School Rankings will be derived from your Global Sustainability Awards school application. No separate submission or additional form is required.

What are the Green Action School Rankings?

The Green Action School Rankings are a structured, evidence-based assessment framework designed to evaluate and recognise schools for their sustainability initiatives, environmental leadership, and student engagement. The rankings focus on ACTION, IMPACT and CONTINUITY — not just intent.

Why These Rankings Matter

  • Encourages authentic sustainability practices in schools
  • Provides a credible, transparent benchmarking system
  • Celebrates student-driven and institution-led action
  • Aligns school efforts with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Ranking Framework Overview

The rankings are evaluated across three key buckets:

Bucket 1 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
Bucket 2 Sustainable Practices Followed within the School
Bucket 3 Community Engagement & Service

Bucket 1: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

How sustainability is embedded into teaching, learning, and student development.

Parameters:

Curriculum Integration Integration of SDGs, climate change, sustainability, ethics, and citizenship into subjects
Experiential & Hands-on Learning Field visits, audits, surveys, experiments, eco-clubs, labs, gardens, projects related to sustainability
Student Leadership & Voice Student councils, green ambassadors, eco-monitors
Teacher Capacity Building Training programs, workshops, certifications on ESD
Assessment & Outcomes How learning outcomes are measured (projects, portfolios, reflections)

Bucket 2: Sustainable Practices Followed within the School

Daily operations and infrastructure choices that reduce environmental footprint.

Energy Management
  • Use of renewable energy (solar, wind)
  • Energy efficiency measures (LEDs, sensors, audits)
Water Stewardship
  • Rainwater harvesting, water recycling, low-flow fixtures
  • Water audits and conservation campaigns
Waste Management
  • Segregation at source, composting, recycling systems
  • Reduction of single-use plastics
  • E-waste management initiatives
Green Infrastructure & Biodiversity
  • Green buildings, natural ventilation, eco-friendly materials
  • School gardens, tree plantations, biodiversity zones
Sustainable Procurement
  • Eco-friendly stationery, uniforms, cleaning products
  • Local and ethical sourcing practices
Digital & Paper Reduction Practices
