Eligibility Criteria for Class 1 Spell Bee Competition

a. Class 1 children can sit the CREST Spell Bee (Summer) through their school or as individual entrants. Any board is fine, and so is any country, with children from 60+ countries already taking part.

b. This is the last year in which an adult helps during the paper. A parent or teacher may explain what a question means; picking the option is left to the child.

c. Your child writes the paper online from home with the webcam keeping watch throughout. Pick a laptop, desktop or tablet with more than 11.5 inches of screen (a phone will not work) and update the browser first; Google Chrome is the one CREST prefers.

d. The class 1 Spell Bee is held in two levels. In Class 1, the route to Level 2 is a score of 60% or more in Level 1.

e. After registering and paying, reserve a slot in the dashboard, at least 2 days before the exam. CREST also sends email and SMS reminders 2-3 days ahead.

f. Curious about the format first? The free trial works like the real exam and costs nothing.

Benefits of Class 1 Spell Bee Competition

1. Everyday things, by name. The Class 1 list is grouped into Animals, Birds, Colours, Body Parts, Food Items, Clothing and other everyday themes, so nearly every word links to something your child can see or touch.

2. Pairs and patterns. Synonyms, Antonyms and Double Letter Words such as balloon, coffee and umbrella help children notice how words relate to each other and where letters repeat.

3. An easy start from home. Being online and taken from home, the exam lets little ones begin early with little hassle; that is the gist of a published Class 1 testimonial.

4. More sure of themselves. A second Class 1 review thanks CREST for lifting a child's confidence and for building familiarity with computers. Instead of ranks, Class 1 uses a simple bar, and 60% or more in Level 2 wins a Star Medal with its Merit Certificate.

  • Body Parts
  • Food Items
  • Household Items

Some words to expect: alligator and zebra (Animals), khaki and violet (Colours), chilli and sandwich (Food Items), and opposite pairs like late-early (Antonyms). Up to 20% of the questions may have words from outside the list.

This list is the source of roughly 80% of Level 1. Level 2 comes with no word list, because CREST expects children who reach it to be good spellers already. British spellings apply to every answer, with the Oxford Learner's Dictionary as the yardstick.

Not one Senior KG heading is repeated word for word in the Class 1 list. The word families and sight words are gone, themed headings such as Animals, Occupation and Science take their place, and the naming, action and describing words of Senior KG continue under the plainer headings Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives.

The paper, identical in both levels, has 40 questions to answer in 60 minutes, at 1 mark each for 40 marks. Word Cookie, where children catch single-letter spelling errors, is the largest section with 12 questions; Spell-o-Spell and Word Connection have 8 each, and Mingle-Mangle, PictureSpeak and Word Chain 4 each. See the Class 1 Spell Bee marking scheme for details, and remember that a wrong option costs nothing.

How to prepare for Class 1 Spell Bee Competition?

Short, cheerful sessions work well in Class 1: roughly a quarter of an hour on most weekdays, sitting side by side.

Take one heading at a time. In a Body Parts week, touch your cheek, chin and knee and ask your child to spell each one. In a Food Items week, read out the shopping list and spell carrot, butter and tomato together. Animals - Homes, Young Ones, Sound becomes a guessing game: what sound does a frog make (croak), and what is a baby deer called (fawn)?

Synonyms and Antonyms work well as quick pairs: you say big, your child replies small. Word Cookie asks children to catch one wrong letter, so write a word with a single letter changed and let your child find the mistake.

CREST also has a page for many listed words. The one for peacock gives its meaning, usage examples and a few quick questions, which makes a nice bedtime look-up.

Once the headings feel easy, open the Spell Bee sample papers for class 1 as a pair and say every question out loud. An hour for forty questions gives your child 90 seconds apiece, which is plenty of time. Next, run the free trial on the exam computer, camera switched on. Extra practice is available in CREST's Spell Bee (Summer) workbook for Class 1, a book you will find among CREST's Olympiad books.

Level 2 has no list, so keep reading storybooks aloud together after Level 1.
