Competition of International Drawing Olympiad for Class 1

In Class 1 the CREST International Drawing Olympiad (CIDO) moves from land to the sea. All eight topics sit under UN SDG 14 - Life Below Water, from a Big Submarine and a Geometric Pattern Octopus to an Ocean Clean Up with people at work in it. Your child gets 60 minutes for one drawing, which is 15 minutes more than in Senior KG. A parent may still stay close and help with uploading the photo of the sheet at the end. The drawing is marked out of 100, and the biggest share, 30 marks, is for neatness and composition.

Class 1 has no ranks and no second level. A drawing that scores 60% or more earns a Star Medal with a Merit Certificate.

For drawing at home on camera, set up a webcam-equipped computer (laptop or desktop or tablet) with more than 11.5 inches of screen (Windows 8 or above on a Windows machine, or a Mac or an iPad), on a steady internet line, using the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work; Safari cannot be used for the exam). No mobile phone can stand in for the computer.

d. The CREST International Drawing Olympiad for class 1 is a one-sheet, one-level exam. No ranks are given at this stage; a drawing that is marked 60% or more is rewarded with the Star Medal plus a Merit Certificate.

1. The sea to play with. Every topic in the International Drawing Olympiad for Class 1 sits under UN SDG 14 - Life Below Water. Compared with Senior KG, the goal changes from SDG 15 - Life on Land to SDG 14, and the list now includes Poster- Say No to Plastic, the first poster in CIDO. Time goes up as well, from 45 minutes in Senior KG to 60 in Class 1.

The eight topics fall into four kinds. Ocean Scene and Ocean Clean Up are whole scenes, and the clean-up needs people at work in it. Big Submarine, Floral Surfboard, Sea Animal Treasure box and Beautiful Lotus are single things to decorate. Geometric Pattern Octopus mixes an animal with shapes, and the poster is the one topic that must carry a message.

Whichever topic from the Drawing Olympiad syllabus for Class 1 your child practises, the exam itself is one drawing worth 100 marks, with no second level.

The biggest share of the 100 marks, 30, goes to Neatness and Composition, which covers layout, balance, overall impact, line quality, colouring and shading, detailing and craftsmanship. Originality/Creativity is worth 20, Theme Adherence 15, Quality of Scan 15, and Title/Caption and Message Conveyed 10 each.

Things to keep on the table: an HB pencil, eraser and sharpener, a drawing board, and colours of your child's choice, for example crayons, pencil colours, oil pastels, or pastel colours with a brush. Use a white A4 sheet, 210 mm by 297 mm.

The sheet: a border of 1 cm goes all the way round, and the drawing stays within it. Name, CREST ID and class are written outside the border, in the bottom left corner.

During the exam: draw on a clean, flat surface and keep pencil lines crisp, with no broken strokes. The drawing must be held up to the camera every 7-10 minutes so the progress can be followed; failing to do so may lead to disqualification.

The upload: photograph the sheet on a plain background, showing as little of the background as possible, or scan it cleanly without grey patches or scanner marks. Adobe Scan or Microsoft Office Scan are suggested. Upload a .jpg, .jpeg or .png file of up to 10 MB within 5 minutes of submitting the exam; missing that window may lead to disqualification.

Short sessions suit Class 1. Draw together for about fifteen minutes on most days of the week, and let your child pick the colours.

Week one, the creatures: the Geometric Pattern Octopus (circles, triangles and stripes on each arm), the Sea Animal Treasure box and a calm Ocean Scene with fish and waves. Week two, the objects: the Big Submarine with round windows, the Floral Surfboard and the Beautiful Lotus. Week three, the ideas: Ocean Clean Up, with children picking bottles off the beach, and Poster- Say No to Plastic.

For the poster, help your child choose a short slogan to write inside the border. The title should be no more than 6 words.

Then use the Class 1 International Drawing Olympiad sample papers for a full sitting. One drawing in 60 minutes leaves time for a pencil outline, careful colouring, a title and a final check. Stop now and then to show the sheet to the webcam, as in the real exam.
