Reasoning Olympiad for Class 3

CREST Olympiads organizes a CREST Reasoning Olympiad for class 3. The CREST Reasoning Olympiad (CRO) is designed for students who want to improve their Reasoning skills from an early age.

As a child grows older, logical reasoning becomes a natural part of his life. Logical thinking skills assist people in many ways and are a must-learn for students. CRO exam is an international Reasoning Olympiad exam & it is conducted in online mode only.

a. Any Class 3 student may enter the class 3 Reasoning Olympiad, from any school board and from India or abroad. CREST students come from 60+ countries.

b. Your child can come in through a school that registers with CREST, or as an individual if the school is not taking part. Schools can email info@crestolympiads.com to ask for a prospectus.

c. Your child answers alone. During the exam the face must stay fully in view of the webcam, nobody else may use the test, and calculators and other devices are not allowed.

d. Being an online paper sat at home, it needs the right device. Any laptop, desktop or tablet works if it has a webcam and its screen measures more than 11.5 inches; a Windows machine must be on Windows 8 or newer, Macs and iPads are fine, and mobiles are not supported. Use the latest Google Chrome, or Edge or Firefox, on a stable internet connection; Safari will not run the exam.

e. The CREST Reasoning Olympiad for class 3 is held at one level only, and the awards are decided on this paper.

f. Once you have paid, everything runs from the dashboard: book a slot under Book Slot/Take Exam, and on the day the Click To Take Exam button switches on 10 minutes before your time.

1. New ways of thinking. Mirror Images and Water Images, Direction Sense Test and Puzzle Test all appear for the first time in Class 3, so children learn to flip a picture in their head or follow a route of left and right turns.

2. Playing with letter order. Alphabet Test and Logical Sequence of Words asks children to work with the order of the alphabet and the sensible order of words.

3. Different from the usual books. A Class 3 testimonial says CREST Olympiads helped the writer improve and felt quite unlike the usual schoolbooks.

4. A result with context. Results from Class 2 upwards include percentiles and zone ranks, so a Class 3 child can see how the score compares with other children in the same zone.

Students who register separately from school & want to appear for the online Reasoning Olympiad exam for class 3 can follow these simple steps:

Note:

1. Reasoning Olympiad Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a webcam and a good internet facility. Use a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches: a Windows computer or tablet running Windows 8 or above, a Mac, or an iPad. Phones cannot be used. Use the latest version of Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox also work); the exam cannot be taken on the Safari browser. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Class 3 brings the biggest change in CRO so far. The class 3 Reasoning Olympiad syllabus keeps Geometrical Shapes and Ranking Test, lists Analogy as Analogy and Classification, and adds four topics that no earlier class had: Mirror Images and Water Images, Direction Sense Test, Alphabet Test and Logical Sequence of Words, and Puzzle Test. Embedded Figures, Odd One Out, Measuring Units, Grouping of Figures and Series Completion are not in the Class 3 list.

In the Achievers Section, ten Higher Order Thinking Questions worth two marks each are set on these same nine topics.

The paper keeps the shape of Class 2, with 35 questions to finish in an hour for 45 marks; 25 of them are one-mark Logical Reasoning items and 10 are two-mark Achievers items, and a wrong pick never pulls the score down.

That is a lot of new ground for one year, so read the list together before you start and ask your child which names sound familiar. Expect to spend more time on the four new topics than on the ones carried over, and do not worry if the mirror and direction questions take a few tries before they click.

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Start with the four new topics, since nothing in Class 1 or 2 covered them.

Mirror Images and Water Images: hold a card with a letter or a clock face up to a mirror, then imagine the same card reflected in a pond, and compare the two. Direction Sense Test: walk a route at home (three steps forward, turn right, two steps) and ask which way your child is now facing. Alphabet Test and Logical Sequence of Words: arrange words such as seed, plant, flower and fruit in a sensible order, or find the fifth letter from the end of the alphabet. Puzzle Test: short seating puzzles about who sits next to whom.

Then revise Patterns, Analogy and Classification, Geometrical Shapes, Ranking Test and Coding - Decoding, which build on the work of Classes 1 and 2.

Work through the class 3 Reasoning Olympiad sample papers next, one topic at a time and then as full papers; when the sample papers are done, the previous year paper for Class 3 is the next step. Your child manages the clock alone: 60 minutes for 35 questions is about 1 minute 43 seconds each, so leave a few minutes at the end for the ten two-mark Achievers questions. Take the free trial a week or two before the exam to settle any nerves about the webcam screen.

The class 3 Reasoning cut-off & rankings are usually made public so that students can understand the minimum marking criteria. This notifies students of the minimum marks necessary to pass the CREST Reasoning Olympiad exam. After the class 3 Reasoning exam, the cut-offs are released. The answer key for the Reasoning Olympiad for class 3 is released after the examination. This method of providing students with the answer key helps in understanding their errors and correcting them in future exams. Within a month of the final answer key date, the class 3 Reasoning Olympiad results go live on the CREST website. Your child's result sits behind the same login you created at registration.

There are five ranking zones. North, South, East and West divide up the states and union territories of India, and every other country falls in the International zone. A Class 3 child can win gold in three ways: a zonal rank of 10 or less, a percentile of 96 or above, or a top-3 place among the school-registered students of a school with more than 25 in the class. Silver needs a percentile between 93 and 96, and bronze one between 90 and 93.

As CRO is a single-level exam, Class 3 awards are based on this one paper. The three highest international ranks receive an Achiever's Trophy and a Merit Certificate, and every child receives a digital participation certificate.

c. A Gold Medal and a Merit Certificate go to every student at the 96th percentile or above, every student with a zonal rank of 10 or less, and the top 3 school-registered students of each school that has more than 25 students in the class.

d. Students between the 93rd and 96th percentile receive a Silver Medal, and those between the 90th and 93rd percentile a Bronze Medal, each with a Merit Certificate.

e. The top 25% of students receive a Merit Certificate.

f. Students in the top 25% to 50% receive an 'Honourable Mention' Digital Certificate.

g. A student who meets two or more of these criteria receives the higher award. All awards are delivered to the school or home address given at registration.

h. Every online participant receives a Digital Participation Certificate in their dashboard.

1. In how many languages the CREST Olympiads are conducted?

The CREST Olympiads conduct exams in English only. The question paper format is MCQs and students must mark the correct answers. For CREST International Spell Bee exams, an audio-based round is also there.
